Anybody know what difference there is between the SRH840's and SRH940's? Is it really worth paying the extra for the 940's? Thanks

No experience of Shure but some strong views here in favour of the 940s:

I bought the 940 after reading the headfonia review titled "detail monster". My own review compared its signature to the Sennheiser HD800. Many people find it too bright or the bass lacking a little. The 840 will be quite different.

Thank you to both of you. I've read most of the Head-Fi reviews and now I'm even more confused! So many different opinions, obviously a lot of it comes down to personal taste. I suppose I should give a better description of what I'm looking for. At present I have the Shure SRH440's (all I could afford at the time) and I was looking for an upgrade from those. So far I've been reasonably pleased with them. Admittedly they are a little lacking in the bass but what I really like is the smooth vocals and the detail. I know this isn't everybody's taste but I like to be able to hear whatever is in the recording. As an example (purely hypothetically) if I was to plug some headphones into an old cassette deck and couldn't hear any tape hiss I'd be wondering what musical frequencies were missing. And of course all that air and space at the top end. To date every other set of headphones I've heard have far too much treble roll off for my tastes. So bearing the above in mind I'm open to suggestions re other brands, max budget about the same as the SRH940's. Other points to note, they will be purely for home listening so doesn't matter if they're huge, also need to be closed back or else I'm going to be very unpopular! Thanks again.

Several points in your last popint still point to the SRH-940: (1) 440 lacking in bass - the 940 has zero bass emphasis, but it's actually very close to the Senn HD800 bass, so a good choice. (2) Like to hear what's in the recording - 940. (3) Air and space at the top end - 940. (4) Other headphones treble rolloff - not the 940. (5) Home listening, large size - 940.

To get better sound and detail than the 940 at any price, what would be the next step up? I've had about 100 headphones in the past 3 years, so I'm looking at my list for the next better headphone than the 940: Nothing until the Sennheiser HD800, unless you're looking for a different type of sound, such as warmer bass.
