Hi guys and girls,

You know what its like when you or your partner has friends round and the conversation turns to your hi-fi which is standing proud as the centre piece of your living room... then they ask how much it all cost so you tell them and they all say ' How much?!?!... You seriously paid that much for a stereo?!?'...

so...

What songs or albums do you play to non hi-fi minded people in order for them to understand why you are so passionate about your hi-fi and why you pay what is quite a considerable ammount of money for your gear?

Well my response tends to be, 'You paid how much for that car you came in? - something to sit in traffic in that's worth about 20% less each year...".

Thumbs up (if I could). I get a lot of ribbing at work, but almost always from people who are lusting after a better car. For me, a car is functional and gets me from one place to another. Hifi lets me enjoy music and is worth spending on.

I like to play an album the individual is familiar with so (hopefully) they can hear how much better it sounds

i don't tell people what it cost! most the people i know already think there's something wrong with me, i don't need to confirm it.

I just let them play what they like - Most think it sounds really good - especially when I flip it round the house with the Sonos :) - if they don't like it, fair enough, I bought the system for Me and Mrs. Scene to enjoy...

I once caused a hifi doubters jaw to literally drop using road to hell by Chris rea. When his voice kicks in on the first any doubts about the value of a good hifi will be put firmly to one side. Anything by reference recordings aswell.

I don't think nobody should have any need to show off their system to someone who don't get the whole Hifi thing. The system should be taylor for your ears, for your enjoyment. My sister in law own 7 CDs and a micro system and she seem to be very happy with her life, I remember a guy showing me his collection of Painted plates collection that apparantly cost an aweful lot of money and for 2 hours I was thinking how can I get out of this boring conversation. I guess that feeling would be just like a hifi nut try to explain soundstage and texture to someone that listen to radio five all day...horses for courses come to mind.

i can see where your coming from...but:

havent met anyone who wasnt amazed by my system, even people that are sceptical and think "all speakers are the same." But then again It may just be the shock of true low bass. Measured 129db in room at 20hz and 118db at 11hz (after i installed the passive radiators). Its something you've really got to experience...

I see where you're coming from but don't compare us to crazy collectors. Sure, some hifi-nuts are OCD about their CDs/vinyl, but music invokes passion, makes you feel alive. Not really the same thing as collecting stamps, plates, whatever boring rubbish you can dream up

True ture but your hifi is an ultra rare stamp in a stamp collector's mind. All I was trying to say is less and less people are now have interest in proper hifi and while in our world, it's a very exciting subject but for many other? you can almost hear thier thought... "I have the latest Ipod for music, that is more than good enough for me"

In this hobby, one can become very neardy very quickly (yes, including me

), I have the best sound in my front room for many years and I have notice myself talking less and less about hifi and getting more and more exciting about music.
