JohnDuncan:maxflinn:is considered by all other tech sites to be the best tv for sale

Maybe they're stooges for the television industry

And it's not true, anyhow - if you actually read both our review and others, we point out the same strengths and weaknesses (though not all reviews have spotted the colour-banding issues the Panasonic can suffer from). But every one of those reviews was written weeks ago, before other premium sets came onto the market.

It's easy to say the Panasonic is the best premium TV on the market if it's the only one you've tested!

BUT, if it were me, I'd have locked the thread up until the point Max had confirmed he'd bought the magazine and read all the relevant reviews thoroughly, so he actually had some logical basis for his arguments. Until that point everything he's saying is just irrelevant hot air.not so at all , my beef was not the 5 stars for the sony , re read the various threads and that is clear ..

I didn't say it was Max, in fact I didn't directly mention the Sony at all, so I don't know why you'd mention it.

my issue was how the vt20 , a tv i have seen many times , and is considered by all other tech sites to be the best tv for sale , could get 4 stars when its given top marks everywhere else ? and how whfi found no crosstalk on a tv that so far ,the two other reviewers that have tested both has found ? will reading the review answer that question ? doubt it ..

Really? you doubt that? You doubt that actually reading the review you've spent THREE DAYS criticizing is a good idea?

Andrew's right, sorry Max, I used to like you but this weekend has seen some of the most ridiculous postings I've ever read here (and that's saying something, I post here myself after all...), I won't use the phrase "get a life" because I think it's deeply insulting but I do think you really need to re-evaluate your priorities because this "discussion" has been the most ludicrous, delusional thing I've ever seen.

You're not a bad chap Max, I don't think there's any malice in you but I won't be reading your postings any more, sorry.

But then according to Max, we never give Panasonic TVs five stars, and that's nonsense too. As the (cuts and pastes from a zillion other posts over weekend) five-star, Supertest win for Panasonic in this very issue shows. Or indeed its Award win.

Clare Newsome: long bracketed these two sizes together (and the 47in sets where they pop up). Admittedly that's a legacy of the days when you didn't get many/any LCDs above 46in, so we need to look at that.

46" is a bit of an awkward size, it's 4" from both 42 and 50" sets, so could arguably be lumped in with both (or neither), I guess it would make more sense to compare based on price in that instance. Mind you in that case you wouldn't be comparing the Sony with anything, what is it £3500? How much is the 52" going to cost?

I've only just noticed Max that you don't actually own the TV with just the four stars!! I had assumed that you were defending it with your life because it was your pride and joy. I'm even more confused now as to why you are vehemently arguing about it.

And you haven't read the review.

And you haven't seen the Sony in action.

And......, surely you get my point?

JohnDuncan:Yes but if we locked all threads that contained irrelevant hot air until they could be backed up with reason...

Yes but most of those don't pretend to be anything else, which is fair enough.

ah , ill wait and read the review guys , before commenting more , this 4 star rating for the panasonic has become a little too much about me for my liking , many other posters have commented on the rating , have posed questions regarding whfis reviewing procedures , and have asked questions about the difference in size/price between the two tvs , ill step away now and leave you guys to answer them

I fear people are getting confused between the Sony models. The 46in Sony 'HX903 we've tested costs £2500, compared to the Panasonic VT20's £2300.

Though as we clearly point out in the review, the Panasonic comes with built-in 3D plus two pairs of glasses; with the Sony, you need to add a 3D transmitter (£60) and £100 per pair of glasses. That's if you actually want to watch 3D, of course (and if your retailer hasn't bundled them in for free).

Which I hope we have, if you'd bothered to read any of the detailed, factual answers I've posted over the last three/four days - as opposed to ignoring anything that contradicts your own opinion.

If anyone else has any other questions about the review, we are of course happy to answer them !

Okay, so if the Panasonic was given 5 stars, yet the Sony is better (Going on the review discussion here, I've not seen either set in action nor read the review, but happy to go with the WHIFI verdict until I can see reason to believ otherwise), what do they give the Sony, 6?

Also, why all the mention of crosstalk, is this not just a small problem in a small area of the tv's performance, why not pick up on which one has the better online content, dlna capabilities or menus?

BUT, if it were me, I'd have locked the thread

Which one? There are at least three on the go, plus associated max-induced attack threads on other subjects, too...

i started this thread because i thought others could give their opinion on whether or not they agreed with the 4 stars without getting embroiled in an argument , didnt work though ..

i started the other "vt20 will it be crowned king" or whatever , thread for a bit of banter , as ive started many threads in the past , i fully expected the pana to get 5 stars , as did many others . i didnt think whfi would say that they thought it was the best tv on sale , as others have , but i fully expected it to get 5 stars ..

thats two threads by my reckoning ?

i dont know anything about any "max induced attack threads" ?

If something new in the same arena is much better then it can't get 5 stars. As Clare said if it had been reviewed earlier it would have got 5 (at least until the next supertest when I assume it would have had one knocked off).

Was it? I must be thinking of something else then, could have sworn the price gap was more significant than that...

Going back to the original point of this for me the set should not have got 5 stars IMO!

I've demo'd the set twice as I was un-decided initially between the VT20 and the HX903, however once I had the 3D Demo and put those terrible glasses on that was my mind made up.

As yet the HX903 has yet to be officially released in the UK, it's been delayed once, and I'm still waiting patiently for my order to be delivered, so no-one apart from the guy's at the mag have been able to do a side by side comparison, so therefore I trust the reviews, as I buy the mag and visit this site for their expertise!

Oh, just others warming to your theme, max...

i didnt start the former andrew , the latter i had no involvement in , though i found it a pretty good read , the op asked questions and got answers , quite a good thread imo ..

I haven't seen the vt20 so I couldn't possibly comment on whether it should or shouldn't have received 5 stars. I hope this contribution was helpful.

I don't think Max is a bad sort I believe he is what is known as a 'fanboy' and panasonic are his football team, his facebook, his hobby.

And just to add my 2 pennies worth I fully understand the difference between many online reviews and WHFi reviews. The online reviews tend to be done on their own as and when they receive them, whereas WHFi do comparissons which in my opinion gives a more detailed review. While i do not always agree with the WHFi reviews I appreciate it is their opinion and nothing more. For example i recently bought an MP3 player which garnered a 3 star review from WHFi but i think it's great because it meets my needs at the right price point but quit frankly the fact it got only 3 stars means not a jot to me.

The forums are a great read of a lunchtime :)
