Hi all.

Im new. I purchased some good quality equipment about 12 years ago which i still have.

Dali 350 floor standing speakers

Musical Fidelity XA1 amp

Also using a 50 inch samsang plasma and a PS3

My question is, i am now looking to purchase a full ome cinema system. Should i purchase a complete package? Which woul mean i no longer have a use for the Dali 350 speakers of the amp.

Or should i intergrate them into the new system, If so, any suggestions.

Budget ideally as low as poss but will go up to 500

Cheers Matt

I would definitely consider keeping the MF amp and usiing it for HIFi purposes with the new system. Make sure any AV amp you buy has front pre-outs which can then be connected to the MF for stereo use.

I know nothing about your speakers but with home cinema it is usually best to have all 3 front speakers as part of the same package. Did Dali ever do a centre speaker to go with the 350s. If they did then a secondhand one and some rears is all you need + an AV amp of course.

Personally I would keep the speakers. Pick up a centre speaker and some small surrounds. Also a budget AV receiver with preouts in case you wish to continue using the MF as stereo amp.(although I ditched my Arcam and am totally happy with my Yamaha on its own).

Strangely enough I downgraded my 5.1 system recently from Dali Ikon 6 front /Dali vokal 2 centre, and I am now using some old MS902Sigs as main speakers and an MJA pro 50 sub (this was for paranoia reasons and not having drivers within reach of young fingers!)

I have a matching MS905C centre, but I am actually using a Dali Vokal 2 as it is slimmer(the MS obstructs the TV picture). So it doesn't match my mains. Does it impact the sound? No, in fact it is better than the MS905C and I feel fits perfectly well. I don't subscribe to the theory that your front three speakers MUST match (in anything other than a KEF-egg style package they are different anyway). Once my Yamaha RXV667 had gone through auto setup with the supplied mic and I tweaked it so the mains were set to small, I think it now sounds even better.

Thanks for replys.

Having looked around im considering the
MORDAUNT SHORT ALUMNI 5.1 package with a Sony STR-DH820 amp
I could then continue to use my flour standing dali 350's and if i wanted have a 7.1 system.

Any opinions?

Matt

I'm sure that would work beautifully. You should audition it and see how you like it.

Does any one have any opinions on the
Onkyo TX-NR609 compared to the Sony STR-DH820

Is the Onkyo worth the extra 150 pounds ?

You should make a list, and audition. In the end it's you who must live with what you buy, and simply listening to others advice and reading reveiws should only used as advice on what to audition, not what to buy blind.
