I have downloaded a few cartridge alignment tools which I have used in the past but since ive got a £320 MC I want to get the most out of it so should I invest in a cartridge alignment protractor (van den hul sell one for £20...£30 with a hi fi news test lp) because of the cartridge weight being a hefty 10.5g do I need to mess around with the VTA a lot? I had a 2m Blue cartridge before...your help or advice is greatly appreciated

Hi gbhsi 1

The protractors you can download for free from vinyl websites are pretty good and acurate.

For peace of mind and a suggestion from stevieg I bought an Avid protractor for my Rega P3 24 and while my cartridge alignment was almost the same as the Avid protractor for £28 I have peace of mind knowing it setup correctly and I belive that the difference in alignment has improved the sound.

My Cartridge cost me £70 and if I had a £320 cartridge I would see £20...£30 for optimal alignment as cheap as chips.

I bought a small pair of scales from Malvern Audio off the web, capable of doing MM and MC, cost about £14 and used these for setting up the stylus tracking force.
Remember now you have a MC keep metal objects away from the stylus.
I set my tracking force by weighing the stylus protection cover on its own first, then fit to stylus and add this weight to recommended downforce. Simples.

The protractors from vinylengine are apparently pretty good - a mate of mine who uses Benz Micro and Dynavector swears by them. Scales are definitely a good idea. You can also still get, I think, the Hi Fi News test record, which always used to be the ultimate in fine tuning your system.
