And, should I junk this in the pic - is it just rubbish. I think it is the original headshell that came with the Pioneer back in the seventies and I had labelled it as stereo. Things were so very different 50 years ago.

That looks like a headshell with adjustable azimuth for a cartridge that is fixed with no actual adjustment at the fixing point. You don't need it.
For what its worth the cartridge shown will work but, with a conical tip, it isn't going to do the turntable justice.
Spend a bit more on an elliptical stylus at least.

OK, so this month I should just get the cartridge and wait till next month to get a stylus. How does that sound?
Or, maybe get the conical one now and change the actual stylus later?

Bearing in mind that the audio system I will be using is a TV soundbar!!

In that case just get the cartridge you mentioned.
You can always upgrade stylus in the future if required.
How do you plan to play a turntable through a soundbar? Or have I missed something?

Yep, good shout, though that was the one I'd recommended before. You can also get them pre-assembled onto a headhsell. You just need to check the assembly suits your deck. This one below comes in at £46:-

While I am looking for a headshell I notice that some are many times more in price than others. Why is this is my question?

In fact I can buy a headshell with a cartridge and stylus for the same money as a low cost headshell. It makes me think I might as well buy something like this just for the headshell and maybe get a AT-VM95E later.

Headshell prices vary hugely depending on material used, specifications, and what they think they can get away charging for it.....
Cheap plastic ones like that one from eBay might not be the way to go, unless you are broke..... In which case vinyl isn't for you.

The headshell with mounted AT works a treat. I've had one for the 95C and then some time ago, I think one for the 95ML when I used to have it and the headsheel was fine. Yes, you can of course spend through the nose for a headshell, but then again, as you rightly pointed out, people get fleeced all the time in hifi. Maybe you did too.

No John, I referred to the Ebay link with the VM95C mounted to the head shell, not your Pioneer one...
