I have just bought the LG HB 354 Blue Ray Home Cinema System (2,1). Although the speaker set up appears reasonably simple there is no guidance in relation to the speaker volume. It goes from +6db into the minus range. The action scenes are great but the actual talking is not always the clearest?????? Any ideas........................

+6 dB will be the loudest setting on the LG - getting near this means you are driving the amp too hard and risk damaging your speakers so you hopefully you're listening to most films somewhere in the minus dB levels.

Normally on a 5.1 system, if the dialogue isn't clear, you just upped the level of the centre speaker to compensate. Given you have a 2.1 system though, you can't do this. This suggests therefore that where the dialogue isn't clear, the soundtrack hasn't been mixed properly and thus the action scenes are too loud compared to the dialogue. I'm afraid there's not much you can do about this except read reviews on films to see if this is potentially an issue for your setup.

Thanks for that.......why do they give you the option of changing the volume settings????? What does it achieve???????

Ahh, I may have misunderstood your first post.

When you talk about the speaker volume, are you meaning the ability to set different levels on the right and left channels, or just the system volume in general? If you mean the ability to set different levels on the left and right channels (and sub), the reason for this is, not everyone is able to set their speakers up so the left and right are equidistant from their sitting position. As a result, you can set different volume levels (and sometimes distance as well) for each speaker and the sub to ensure at the listening position, you get the same volume level from all the speakers. There should be a test tone which allows you to listen and then set the volume level accordingly.

If you don't mean this, then I'm not sure I understand what the issue is I'm afraid!

No...you've got it thanks.......I didn't understand why you could set each individual speaker volume level and if there was an optimum level......many thanks for your time!!!!!
