My current set up among other things consists of a sony STRDA1200e amp and Q-acoustics 1010 speaker package. My issue is this....... Should I set speaker settings to small or large in the receivers menu? I have tried both and while I think the large speaker setting gives me a more rounded presentation , for some reason when I listen to a dts soundtrack there seems to be no sound coming from the sub-woofer at all. However when I change settings back to small , hey presto the sub kicks back in....... what`s goin` on?????? anyone know why this is????

It's usually just a change in the crossover point - ie 'large' will direct sub-40hz to the sub, 'small' will divert sub-80hz, that sort of thing - 40hz coming from the sub will be less noticeable than 80hz, but should still be there.

Edit - from the Sony manual - "The "LARGE" and "SMALL" settings for each speaker determine whether the internal sound processor will cut the bass signal from that channel. When the bass is cut from a channel, the bass redirection circuitry sends the corresponding bass frequencies to the sub woofer or other "LARGE" speakers"

ok that figures , but I mean nothing comes from the sub.Surely the " .1 " information should be audible. Also when I listen to DD5.1 when speakers are set to large the sub happily bounds along......... it`s only with dts that this happens. Fault with the amp maybe??? God i hope not as I really like the sound

When you set to "large", check that it doesn't set subwoofer to "No", since the opposite is true - ie when you set subwoofer to "No" it sets all the speakers to "large". It's be unusual, but maybe worth checking.

Also from the manual - "In order to take full advantage of the Dolby Digital bass redirection circuitry, we recommend setting the subwoofer's cutoff frequency as high as possible".

Maybe the 'intelligent' (sic) crossover in the amp is conflicting with that in the sub, so it ends up with nothing? Can't actually get my head round how that could possibly be the case, but whack the crossover right up on the sub and see if that makes a difference.

The crossover is already set to max...... but I will double check that the sub is not set to "no" when speakers are set to large
