A small Sony here, a Phillips in France, a small plug-in portable drive by Samsung.

Philips DVD players were not the most reliable ones from memory. A new Sony DVD player would the route I would take. Lots of people are buying that Sony DVD player I recommend. Worse comes to worst you can return it for free within 30 days.

I see it's priced at £349 on Amazon, acceptable if it's as excellent as you and others say. Are DVDs that dated now? We spend much time at our 2nd home in France and the super, high-tech "mediatheque" in town has a huge collection of DVDs for loan - with a far, far smaller selection of BluRay discs. The French are very keen on technology.

I had a look on Amazon and it was a pleasant surprise, you can still get the latest DVD movies.
From my own perspective, I love to watch movies in glorious 4K but you pay a premium price for the pleasure.
I noticed on Amazon, the DVD format for the latest movies were selling for £9.99, so there's good value there

I haven't the facility to test DVDs on a variety of players: we have two fairly ordinary players plus a small Samsung external - which I just tried yet again, plugging it into my still rather new high-spec PC, dodgy disc still refused to play.
If the discs won't play on all your players, why do you think that getting a new machine is going to solve the problem? It sounds like a disc issue.

We've had issues with e r - and it's consistent across players. Ergo it's a disc issue.
