Secondhand vinyl

There's a record shop near me that's closing down and the owner has offered to give me 1000's of records for free. He's kept all of the really valuable stuff like the Beatles for himself but there's loads of classical music there plus a few other random old records there.

Does anybody know if this is likely to be valuable? Would they be easy to sell on eBay or would I just be lumbering myself with loads of records that nobody wants?

Probably depends on condition. If reasonable nick should be worth something. I would get them, sort them out anything you don't want give to charity shops.

If they're classical, the only really valuable ones are from the 1950s/early 60s, original HMV's with ASD xxx numbers, or Decca, Columbia equivalents, and in good condition. 1970s and 80s classical isn't worth much, though a lot of it sounds superb and you may want to keep it! More info here

I'll have another look later to see if there are any Decca or Columbia there. Looking on eBay most classical vinyl seems to be priced for about £3-£4 each which would be more time and hastle than it's worth selling them individually.

I've managed to cherry pick about 50 Decca classical records and a couple of Columbia ones too.

There will be some more records there to look through tomorrow. Does anyone have any other suggestions for what I should look out for?

Put them in a moderate oven, about 150 Celsius should do it, until they get a bit "pliable". Put one record at a time on top of a large empty pyrex bowl. Put a smaller pyrex bowl full of water over the middle.

Go to you next car boot sale and flog the results as "novelty fruit bowls" :cheers:

Flippin' 'eck!

So after three years of these records sitting around gathering dust I finally got around to having a proper look to see what's there. It turns out that I have a matching pair of first edition records which are in very good condition (the records are mint and the sleeves are very good too). Looking at the discogs website they could be worth as much as £400 for the pair. Clicky

Does anyone have any idea where will be the best place to sell them?

Discogs or eBay would be best, but do keep in mind that classical buyers are even more fussy about condition than your regular record buyer. Mint must mean perfect etc. etc.

I don't want to put a dampener on it, Steve, but that record has only sold once ever, so realistically, £50 would be the more likely price, depending on the condition.

Jerry Klinger was right about Decca too, stuff with a 33CX prefix can be very valuable, it all depends on the record, and condition.

Some classical records are worth thousands, and are probably the only records that can still be bought for peanuts that have genuine value.

Best thing to do is play them..bruckner is great! Otto Klemperer is a bit slow going, I collect Decca wide band recordings..as they are very well recorded..but Decca ace of clubs which are later re issues sound pretty good too! I have 25 jazz mono lps on boutique labels..it seems they are worth £150 upwards each album? So what! It's the music in them that the deal..most brilliant recording too..thats the thing with record collecting..its linking into another time..and one puts this old record on the turntable and it's a wonderful thing! Better than money..if you have any recordings of the magic flute? ( Mozart) I might be interested..even if you only have side three and six for example? I'm trying to collect the set..if you find anything? Post a pic? I'll buy any Decca wideband too..if it's sensible money, cheers

I haven't listened to them yet but might give them a go (my Shure M44G cartridge is very good for having low record wear and I'll reduce the weight a bit too).

I've already given the rest of them away I'm afraid. I've very picky when it comes to classical music and there wasn't anything to my taste. But don't worry you didn't miss out on any Mozart. Mind you if there was any Mozart I'd probably have kept it for myself as he's my favourite composer.

The records look mint (I haven't listened to them though). The sleeves are also in good condition but with a few minor blemishes.

I always prefer the brutal truth rather than a sugar coated lie to spare my feelings.

TBH I was getting sick of having the records lying around the house and would've been happy to give them away for nothing just to be rid. I'm not a money oriented greedy man and would be more than happy to get just £50 or less. Although obviously I'll take more if it's in the offing.

Looking HERE the prices on eBay seem to be all over the place from £20 up to £308 so it's probably pot luck.
