sand filling stands to have spendor speakers on?

Hi all,

I currently have my speakers on sand filled partingtons, but have read somewhere that they may like stands that are not filled.

What does everyone think, filled 3/4, or not filled? As going to pour it out is a pain and then filling them again afterwards is too.

I was thinking about it the other day and as the SA1's need a low mass stand, and so did the epos I used to have, was wondering if by putting 3/4 sand in the tubes, if this is deadening down the already smooth presentation of the spendors.

Lets hope someone has a recomendation, as 3 of us are waiting lol

Well, I don't fancy mucking about with all that sand inside my Atacama's - it chafes!

I have Atacamas as well and (very) occasionally I thought about replacing the sand with sound bytes or equivalent but I've had them for about 14 years (and that includes the sand) so I guess unless I replace them it ain't gonna happen.

At the risk of repeating myself...ditto!

Where would you find out something like that?

The design principle of the matching SA1s stands is low mass.

EDIT - to quote Spendor from their Website:

Matching low-mass stand to complement the design

I've spent a lot of time playing around with my stands (Apollo A4/6), sand and the SA1s. I've concluded that they sound better with no sand.

The sound seems to be more lightfooted, dynamic and energetic. By mass loading I'm sure I could hear the colouration that my stands add. I've even got a suspician that I can still hear some colouration in the mids but will only determine if it's the stands by buying the SA1 matching ones!

There is of course a difference between a stand which has been designed to be low mass in the first place and one which has simply is not filled with mass...that does not constitue a 'proper' low mass stand.

Well, if all goes ahead as planned, a Best Buy store is coming to my locality - I am tempted to take my Spendors along and audition some of their stands - if that's something they offer.

In the meantime, what about a quick query on the subject to Spendor themselves?

I will try them and find out.

Hope they don't come back and say it could be either way though!

Will take the sand out tomorrow and find out for myself I think, best way to do it.

Below is the answer from Spendor on filling the stands:-

"There
is no
definitive answer to your question about sand-filling your stands: the
idea of
adding sand to loudspeaker stands is partly to create extra mass, but
also to
stop 'ringing'/resonances from colouring the sound. However, too much
filling
can also 'deaden' the sound, affecting the vitality of the performance.
Very
much open to experimentation and ultimately your personal
preference."

Tried mine with and without the sand, and I am going without sand (for now lol). Will try it for a few weeks then change if I am unsure.

The partingtons are already ver heavy, but when I took the sand out, weighed it and it was 3lb 6 oz, so about 1.5kg's in old money.

dont know if it helps the other users but at least I tried

Me 2. Your speakers are made to be sat upon low mass stands so get saving

.

Was going to buy some sa1's for £700 off ebay, but didn't have the money, darn!

I was asking the GF to lend me the cash!

Would you think they would of been an upgrade as to what I have now? I love the spendor sound, but the SA1's are a bit more get up and go.

Well I guess emptying a bit of 14 year sand's not going to hurt and if the worst comes to the worst I'll just have to sneak out and buy some S/Dreadnoughts while the other half isn't looking

haha good luck sneaking them into the house, they are damn heavy!

everyone says they are ugly, but I asked the GF which she liked best, the partington or the atacama aurora, and as I have 2 pairs in my sig, she went for the dreads. She said they look better, I was gobsmacked. Think she is a keeper

Wouldn't like to say really as it's all so very personal. I've heard comments that the S3e provide more bass but I'm willing to bet it's less accurate. The SA1s are certainly not warm sounding and are a change in presentation to the S3e. I've read on another forum that someone actually preferred the more laidback S3e. The best way to judge would be to try a pair; if you're anywhere near Oundle then perhaps we could compare!
