No specific experience of this model, but in general recorders like this make pretty poor CD players. You'd do better to think of buying a separate budget CD machine, assuming the rest of your system is up to showing the benefits it brings.

What's this DVD Player like as an Upscaler of normal DVD's?

Very good indeed - which is why it won our recent budget DVD player Group Test. It 'only' upscales to 1080i, but does that highly effectively for the money.
