I've just taken my mum to comets and currys to look at 32 inch tvs with a view to then getting it elsewhere on the internet cheaper.

She really liked the look of a Samung LE32A457C1 which came out a couple of weeks ago according to the ever so helpful chappie in Comets. Before going in to the store I had my mind on a Panasonic or a Sony - how does Samsung compare in the way of quality and reliability?

The Samsung model has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. How important is the contrast ratio on a 32'' LCD? Panasonic has a 32LND70 model that only has 7000:1. Both models are a similar price.

Any advice as to which tv to go for?

Samsung produce some excellent TV's and actually manufacture lcd panels in a joint venture with Sony at the SLCD plant in Korea. Quality has improved considerably over the past few years and their tv's are still often cheaper than Sony or Panasonic. They are now one of the 'big players' in the tv market and (if I was not a complete Sony fan) I would not hesitate to buy one of their sets...you can see from the forums that quality issues can affect even the most esteemed manufacturer - Panasonic have had several issues with some of their models recently. The Samsungs are also beautifully designed in my opinion...

As far as contrast ratio is concerned - the claims are a little meaningless...check the picture before you buy.

Don't be taken in by the numbers game. Manufacturers frequently claim somewhat exaggerated figures and there are lots of other factors that affect picture quality, not just contrast ratio.

Yes, I noticed that both the Panny and Sony 32'' came out better than Samsung in one of your reviews. The Sony design is not as nice as the Samsung (IMO), but Panasonic are giving the 5 year guarantee.

Decisions, decisions.

Just picking up on teh 5 year guarantee point.

Why not buy your samsung from John lewis where they give a free 5 year guarantee on it . or from another retailer where you can pay £60 or so for an extended warranty ...if its important to you.
