I have a Denon DVD 1910 that's 2 1/2 years old and a new Denon AVR1910, connected by an HDMI lead. Although I am getting multi-channel sound from DVD-Audio discs, I am getting only a conspicuous silence from SACD discs (except for the CD layer) Anyone know why this might be happening?

Cheers

Fear not, I'm sure that WHF?S&V and Gramophone's SACD guru will be along soon...

errr, I could be wrong here but wasn't it the 2910 that plays SACD's?

not sure the 1910 plays 'em.

I have the same problem/issue. My kit's different, but I have an SACD/DVD-A player connected to my AV amp (together with all the usual HDMI stuff).

Don't worry - it's normal!!

Only the DVD-A is output digitally because, as I understand it, DVD-A is a digital format. SACD is analogue and therefore requires you to output the sound through the 5.1 analogue jacks into the amp.

That's the reason I went with the Yamaha 667 - it's got 5.1 audio in unlike most of its competitors.

Interestingly, the Cambridge BD/SACD/DVD-A player you can get from Richer sounds (the only multi-format deck around, I think) does output SACD via HDMI - or so the guy in the shop said!

Sorry, but that is completely wrong. SACD is not analogue and my Oppo happily plays through an HDMI connection to my Onkyo 875. What is required is the amp must be able to decode the encrypted DSD format output by the SACD player.

This should work "Via the HDMI all standard audio codec's can pass to the receiver plus the new high definition formats. SACD DSD streams are also decoded" You will have to tell the 1910 to use the HDMI output for SACD.

the avr1910 cant decode DSD from SACD.. so hopefully your SACD player can decode it and send to the AVR as PCM? The Oppo BD83 had this option..

Sorry - I'm just repeating what the 'expert in the shop told me when I bought the kit!

I sit corrected.

That said - on a regular multi format player (ie non HDMI) I can't output SACD through the optical right?

You can output SACD as digital or analogue. If analogue, your player decodes signals and outputs as 2.0 or 5.1 via analogue outputs obviously.

If you want to output digital it has to be HDMI. If your receiver accepts DSD, set your player to output SACD via HDMI in DSD. If that doesn't work, set your output as PCM via HDMI. Your player will convert DSD to multichannel PCM before outputting.

Right

I believe that the information that Denon state about the 1910 accepting DSD over HDMI is wrong. You've got to jump up several levels before Denon will accept it. Same problem with my 1909, but at least my 370 can convert it to LPCM.
