And they arrived yesterday! Wired them up (QED Micro) to the ZP120 very quickly to have a listen, they're not setup in place properly yet, one is sitting on an upright piano, the other on top of another speaker, on another speaker on a coffee table, just to get close to the same height as the other one.
First impressions, very favourable, especially once I'd reset the ZP120s tone controls, I'd tweaked it to give the outdoor speakers more bass and forgotten I'd done it, I presume they need running in but even so, very, very nice indeed, my missus instantly said "these sound better then the other ones" (meaning my 10 year old KEF Cresta 2s that are on TV/Hi-fi duty in the living room, you'd kind of hope they would sound better really), I asked her in what way and she said "the sounds move around the room better" (we were listening to the opening of the Propellorheads On Her Majesty's Secret Service with a sound effect the whizzes back and forth between the speakers, she right, the effect is MUCH more noticable). For me bass seems more realistic, not necessarily deeper, for instance the bass line on Gorillaz' Feel Good Inc. actually sounds like a bass guitar, it doesn't on the KEFs, well, not so much anyway. That was the most immediate impression, I didn't listen for very long, I've had a long week at work and I was pretty shattered but the midrange seemed very solid, which is important to me and I couldn't detect any noticeable flaws at this stage, no obvious harshness to the top end. I'll have a further listen over the weekend (I think the mother-in-law is going to get a rude awakening tomorrow morning. Lazy cow.).
Build quality seems good though, they're physically smaller than the KEFs, which I wasn't entirely expecting but the gloss black top and bottom caps are very nice, there's even sponge feet on the bottom, and, as an added bonus, included in the box were custom wall mounts, which screw into two brass fixings in the back of the speaker, which could be very handy, I haven't decided where they're going yet but they could end up being wall-mounted, so that's a great inclusion for the money, especially considering that the wall brackets for KEFs iQ30, which retails for a lot more than the Roths, is an extra 30 quid, so for 50 quid all in, I'm VERY happy!
