My bet is that the 50 inch 9G Pioneer will get an award for the larger screen size and the Sony W4500 will also get an award for the smaller screen size. Taking price into consideration, the Sony W4500 should clinch the Product of the Year title for the TV category. Just my prediction.

So regardless of price or size which has the overall better picture the Sony W4500 or a Pioneer PDP-LX5090 when sat at around 10ft away?

If (and that is a HUGE if) price and size isn't a consideration, the Pioneers remain the premium option - but the competition has really closed the quality gap this year. Shows that if you give a market something to aim for, standards can rise across the board - while prices fall, too!

So does that mean the Pioneer PDP-LX5090 is currently the best tv on the market?

The key words in that quote are 'blacks' and 'whites' - the new Kuros would still go blacker, but not handle whites as, well, 'whitely' as the two W4500s we've tested.

Re SD - obviously doesn't handle SD as well as the HD Ready-spec 42in Kuro from last year, but it's in the same ballpark as the Full HD models. Certainly up with the very best LCDs we've seen (though i'd argue Panasonic's Freeview tuners - on its high-end models -ÿ have the slightest of edges).

As Andy says, let's see what Awards bring!

Hi Clare,

Thanks for the help! Can one gather from what you have said that the SD performance of the 46W4500 is on par with that of the G9 Full HD Kuros (including watching SD TV Channels)? Also, regarding the Black Levels, if they are not quite up to the current G9 Pioneer's, would it be safe to say that they are better than last years G8 Kuros and this years Panasonic Plasma Models? If so, considering this is LCD we are talking about, it really is a great improvement and my two main concerns - SD PQ & Black Levels would have been addressed at a price point I could consider! Up till now, ÿhave kind of felt "chained" to Plasma but this may change that!

Regards,ÿ

Bazzy!ÿ

In absolute terms, the G9 Pioneers remain the best you can buy. Sadly, too few people will have the space in their rooms or wallets to buy them....

So many questions!

I haven't see the Sonys up against last year's Full HD Pioneers, but i'd wager the Kuros remain the blackest beasts in town. But the W4500s are certainly the most impressive LCDs we've seen for black levels, and are up there with the new Panasonic plasmas.

But don't forget the Panas are two inches bigger, and have plenty else to offer (including superior sound, if that's an issue) - see and hear for yourself!

There's no denying it, the Pioneer is better. In, fact, the only advantage the Sony is that it is Full HD, but that doesn't matter at that screen size, unless you're using it as a computer monitor. It also has punchier whites, but that's the only noticeable advantage. The 4280XD is a Pioneer plasma, so it has better contrast than anything else at its price, and like other good plasmas, such as the Panasonics, it has better colour and better motion handling.

Overall, just avoid Sony LCDs, as they just make you pay extra money for pointless Full HD. Just buy Pioneers and if they're too expensive buy the 720p Panasonic plasmas. Trust me, I've seen the difference between LCDs and plasmas myself and the Pioneers look amazing.

I'm in the process of trying to get a refund on my Panny TX32-LXD700. Whilst the picture quality and sound are superb, it has progressively gotten worse with respect to 'back-light bleed/clouding'. This now spreads from all 4 corners and is really annoying on dark scenes/letter boxes when watching films etc.

My question is does the Sony W4500 suffer from this 'back-light bleed' or should I go for a plasma? I'm now paranoid about getting another brilliant performer with an annoying 'light-side'! I would appreciate advice on whether to go for the Sony W4500 or Panny 37PX80B?

Cheers

I'm guessing being a Nintendo_Fan, full HD doesn't mean a lot to you :)
