2) I don't think Darbee is worth the extra £100, but that's my opinion.

IMO Darbee would be worth paying not to have. If the makers of the film had wished it to look like it does post-Darbee alterations then presumably they'd have done that in the first place.

Agreed.

Though the perfectly transparent digital video chain is a myth. All manner of processing takes place within your TV.

I don't think £100 is a particularly high premium. I'd like to see what Darbee processing can do for lower resolution sources or poorly mastered Blu-ray titles. I might be unimpressed, but I'd like some experience of the hardware before writing Darbee processing off as a useless gimmick.

It is in stock here:

http://www.audiocominternational.com/home-cinema/152-oppo-bdp-103d-region-free-dvd-zone-b-blu-ray.html

Looks like you get a calibration disc too and a HDMI cable in the box! That is starting to make up for the £100 more with the extras.

David, I don't suppose I could return mine and pay £100 more to get the 103d? :)

Thanks BigBoss. Bit of newbie when it comes to Blu Ray.

Would I be right in saying that regardless of connection (USB/HDMI) from source they both go through the same processor/processing. It's just that a lot of my content is on a portable hard drive and would like it, to what extent it can, upscale my TV/Film content.

Completely appreciate it can't perform magic but just good to know if the USB connection goes through the same processing as it would if connected via HDMI.

It will be interesting to see whether What Hifi reviews the Oppo 103d after their controversial review and relatively low score given to the 103. The Darbee processing feature does look interesting and could distinguish it from the pack.

I would have a look at one first. Whilst there will be a benefit for the Darbee addition, that YouTube clip isn't something I would go by. If you noticed, the Darbee level was at 100%, which if this is measured the same as those with the Darblet, none of them watch movies with it on 100%! Most seem to use it around the 40-50% mark, which won't show such a striking difference. Having it too high can bring unwanted effects to the picture, and in that clip showing it on a static image of a clean screenshot, these artifacts/effects won't show. A picture that isn't as clean looking as something computer animated - a grainy looking film for example - may not show the same sort of benefit.

We had the players in yesterday, but I have been busy so not had a chance to check one out yet. I'm on my day off today, and I have an install tomorrow morning, then I'll be preparing for a big demo on Saturday, so I may not get to see it until next week. If not, I'll see if I can take it home on Saturday and test out against my 103.

Thanks David - much appreciated. :). Mine is as brand new with all the boxes and contents, no marks. That would be great if you could let me know. Many thanks Gel.

Agreed. It'll be down to who Darbee license their technology to. My guess would be that it will be just for Oppo at this stage.

David, where has your signature gone? :O

Fancied a change :)

I liked seeing you signature it was cool! :)

Oppo supply a HDMI cable in the box anyway, which I'm assuming is the one they're referring to :)

Like David, I got my players in here a couple of days ago but have been too busy to have a play, got it out the box though, so that is a start.

Really looking forward to having a play with the Darbee side of things as it isn't something I have experienced before, although I get the impression it is quite similar to the e-shift technology on the JVC projectors, so it will be interesting to see how that integrates with our X55.

Did you! If I got one with mine I reckon it is still in the box. I haven't seen it anywhere.

Very interested to read the reviews of the darbee oppo edition.

At least one Oppo reseller offers the calibration disc for free with the Oppos, can't remember who!

More details here:

So they have actually removed the QDEO processor for this!!

Oppo is renowned for that processor. I suspect DVD upscaling of the Darbee edition will not be as good.

I have had mine for a couple of weeks and used it on the open day we had. I was reserving judgement until I saw the Darbee in action but it does add a certain depth to the image that I personally think is pretty impressive. Well worth the extra £100 IMO.

Hi

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have to change the settings to achieve that depth to the image, or does it do it out of the box? Cheers.

Yes, you can change the settings. According to Audioholics:

"It's a bit difficult to see on the show floor since you can dial it from 0 to 120% but it's likely, in the home, going to be set somewhere around 30 to 35%. Oppo is implementing it fully and so you'll be able to dial it up or down as desired for the effect you want. If you turn it up too much you'll start to see artifacts, but with moderate use it looks pretty awesome."

You can even switch it off completely.
