If worthwhile I have the opportunity to replace my existing Onkyo. If I bought say the Yamaha RX-A1010 would there be an improvement in performance or would I be best to wait until it finally departs this mortal coil?

Other than being different (Yamaha sound vs Onkyo sound), there will be no benefit in changing to the 1010. You'll also probably find that the 1010 may not quite have the drive that the 905 had. Ideally, you'd have to be looking at the outgoing 3009, or the newer Onkyo TXNR1010 that replaces it. You may find that the older 1009 may be more refined, but you'll be losing out on power ability.

By way of an update I decided to replace my Onkyo with the Yamaha RX-A3010. Managed to get a cracking deal on an ex-demo from Sevenoaks Sound and Vision in perfect condition. A result as far as I'm concerned and a great AV Receiver.

Now looking for a Blueray player that can play 3D discs. At the moment looking at the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 which I've seen for £249. Any thoughts on this player or an alternative? Don't need it to play CDs as I have that covered.

If I were you I'd wait until it dies. It's too good to relegate to a box in the loft.

I'm gonna do the self same thing with my 875. Use it vigorously until it goes pop..... Hopefully in 20 years or so....

Thanks Rick. I'll have a look at them. By the way I reserved the Receiver over the telephone in the morning to collect in the afternoon and the guys at SSAV said they almost had a riot with people ringing up demanding they sell it to them as it was still listed as available on their website and it was the last ex-demo available in the group! Can't believe how lucky I was.

Thanks Voodoo. I decided to give the 905 to my ex-wife so she's happy and I'm apparently £300 poorer. Story of my life :)

Thanks Rick. I have decided to take your advice on the Yamaha blue-ray for a number of reasons. Can't easily get the BD-A1010 but where available they are still being sold for £399 so I might as well wait for the new model, although it seems unclear as to when that will be available.
