Am seriously thinking of buying an ex-demo ONKYO DV SP1000 in USA at a knock down price (it is marked Region 1). Will be quite happy to buy future DVDs from US sources which the ONKYO will "accept". BUT,but, but ......will my European ONKYO receiver and PAL TV here in Spain accept transmission from the ONKYO? Alternatively, can the DV SP1000 be reasonably easily (read -"cheaply"!) converted to Region 2 specification? Any advice to this total beginner very gratefully accepted.

Done a bit of Googlage, and it seems the North American model of this player can't be set to output PAL, so you'll need to check whether your TV can accept NTSC input - most modern sets will. You'll also need a stepdown transformer if this is a North American model, and this may have unpredictable effects on the performance.

However, if the player happens to be a 'worldwide model' - which you can tell from the presence of a voltage selector on the back - these problems won't exist.

Also found a multiregion hack, intended to turn an R2 European version into a multiregion player. No guarantees whatsoever this will work, especially with an R1 N American model, but

"You need the onkyo remote RC-498DV or RC 484M

DVD on, no disc

press "DV" & "1", release both at the same time

( the remote is now in a service-mode - to exit this mode, press dvd twice)

press "return"

press "setup" quickly

press "9" quickly for multi-region

power off the dvd

done!"

You may still find that even after the region hack that the American unit will not be able to play alot of European discs due to the fact they are encoded in PAL and the US unit is NTSC only.
