Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading my cartridge to an Ortofon 2M Bronze in the next 2-3 months and I have no idea how to go about doing the installation. I've heard that spacers are required, but that's all I know *scratch_one-s_head*. Would any of you kind people be able to point me in the direction of a guide or perhaps be able to give me some information yourself?

Kind Regards,

Chris

Where did you purchase the turntable? Was it through a dealer? If so they can help as if you don't know how to fit spacers it sounds like you will also need help aligning the cartridge. Rega do not have arm height adjustment so provide 'shims' of varying thickness that need to be installed under the arm, which means removing it, to ensure the base of the cartridge remains parallel to the LP when fitted. If you don't feel happy doing this find a Rega dealer.

Hi Al,

It was purchased at a local sound specialist/rega dealer so they might be able to help me. I just don't have any way of safely transporting the turntable to them. If the Ortofon 2M Bronze significantly better than the Exact 2? I suppose I could give them a call and ask if they would do a home visit at extra cost.

Regards,

Chris

Can you not pack it in the original box, and secure the arm ( usually with counterweight removed)? Better let your dealer do it, as you seem not to have the first idea - and I don't mean to be rude.

I Learned to wire cartridges in removeable head shells so when fixed ones arrived it wasn't such a learning curve. VTA accuracy isn't the end of the world, as long as the cartridge doesn't ground on the record, which is unlikely. I can't recall if Rega's own are deeper than average; if so, the Ortofon will slope downwards slightly. If the Rega is slimmer, the Ortofon will be uphill, and the rear edge may catch on warps.

A site like vinyl engine will probably reveal all, plus some handy guides, but I've not visited for a while.

The Rega carts are quite short, 14mm?, so you will probably need a spacer. For the Ortofron Blue 18mm? people are saying 2-4mm spacer is right. The size of the Bronze seems to be 18mm as well. If you use 4mm the counter weight may touch the dustcover when closing.

I made up 3 shims each 1mm thick out of Obeche veneer and fitted to my old Planar 3/RB300 arm mounting post for the Ortofon red, the arm is now parallel to the record in the playing position. Also take into account the matt thickness when adjusting the VTA
