Hallo

Reading the online review for the Denon AVR-4318 it,s been a little confusing and unclear to me....it,s been mentioned in the start of the reveiw ( Pioneer's SC-LX82 sounds better) which make the pioneer a clear winner here and then further dawn in the that review i read ( Of course, the Denon's real deal is that front-height speaker support, and in that regard, it's a success)

Assuming that we are testing the AVR-4310 in 7.1 front-height config. against the SC-LX82 in 7.1 mode , in your opinion would the SC-LX82 still sound bettter and be a better amp. than AVR-4310 ?

You really cannot compare two different speaker setups. They're going to sound different for any scene you try to compare with, depending on which audio is supported by that movie. If the movie supports Dolby Pro Logic IIz, only then the front height speakers come into play.

To be honest, you should go for the extra height speakers only after completing the 7.1 setup, i.e, a 9.1 setup. It makes absolutely no sense in wasting the 2 speakers for extra height if you have a total of 7 speakers only.

Bigboss, my understanding is that the sound track does not have to support IIz for there to be sound, it works with any sound track and decides which information of the front L & R to send the the height speakers.Just like how the processing makes 7.1 out of 5.1 soundtracks.

When I was running my AVR-1910 it was a constant value, whether it was receiving a 2.0 or 5.1 lossy / lossless sound track.

markjaspi -That is exactly how it work!! there,s no such think as front-height channel encoded sound track...it,s pllz from dolby and DSX from audyssey that process those extra front-height channel.

Bigboss -apparently you didn,t hear how these extra front-hight channel sound in action , it has far more superior soundstage than the traditional rear surround channel...my guess once you will hear it , you dont wanna waste anymore money on speakers that,s hanging behind you on the back wall , and that is way iam interrested to hear what is WHF-Team openion in that regard.

I'm not a stranger to Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Yamaha receivers have presence channels for 2 front speakers to be positioned above the main pair for over 10 years now. When I demoed my RX-V1900 & also RX-V3900, I also checked the 9.1 setup, with the 2 extra heights. I wasn't impressed at all...........it was quite difficult to notice any difference until I cranked the volume up when the difference was just about audible. But certainly not worth the extra spend for height speakers.

The difference between a 5.1 & a 7.1 surround setup is far more impressive (the sound really envelopes you).

My experience is not an isolated one. Check online reviews of Dolby Pro Logic IIz & you'll see quite a few disappointing ones.

Bigboss, Oddly I agree & disagree at the same time. When I had my AVR1910 with B&W M1's, with some custom installs in the ceiling as the height, then the Dolby PLIIz made a huge difference, probably down to the limitations of the sat speakers.

Now I have RX1's with the Yamaha I prefer the conventinal setup, with the fronts bi-wired and not using their presence set up.

So I think it' probably depends on the kit and what you prefer, also all the reviews I have read on equipment with PLIIz have been very positive and it's a well known fact that the Yamaha's presence is not as good as the new variants from Dolby & Audessy.

Exactly! i second that !

For the record Yamaha presence channel process it dosn,t realy offer any real time encoding for these extra channel, it just simply add some artificail atmospheric info into those channels which Yamaha call the (Blueprint) and they just add them in the DSP while PLLZ & DSX they have real time encoding for those extra front-height channel and the way it works, it just keep looking for embiance and backround cues that is found in the front channels and then after that they process these info for the front-height channels ,so u are geting the real thing here and not just some artificail atmospheric info.

Bigboss -as far as i know and it hasn,t been said by me , it's been approved sciencetifically by the since's that we human tend to hear more sound that are coming at us from the front rather then from the back...

Strang....no one from WHT-Team on the site has an answer or an openion to the above question yet.....

They are all away at the golf course this afternoon

Neither of the above, pesky panther: I don't have anything to add as I haven't used the product sufficiently to have an opinion, but it has been flagged up to the review team.
