Question about the Rotel RA-04SE

Has someone compared this amp to the normal RA-04 ? Are there huge differences or just small ones ? I'm always a bit sceptical when they do not change the looks and simply put Special Edition behind the name.

Unlikely that the test will compare it to the old one (they rarely do), though that would indeed be helpful. The really useful comparisons for many prospective buyers would be to compare it with one model up and one model down. Also sadly rarely done (occasionally in Stereophile, which targets a different budget however).

Well, for the people who already got the new mag, did the RA-04SE got 5 stars ?

Unlikely as you seem to think it would be, that's exactly what we did.

Simon and /or Andrew.
I've read the review of the Rotel RA-04SE. It's a very good review but I always found the original RA-04 maybe a bit too exciting.
Sometimes music needs some calmness/rest and this wasn't always the case with the RA-04.
Now I read in the review that the RA-04SE is even more exciting......I hope it's not so exciting that you will get tired of the music.
Isn't this a problem with the new amp or is it a case of matching with the right speakers ?
Thanks.

If we found a product fatiguing, we would (and do) write it in our review.

I'd strongly suggest that as you had issues with the RA-04 in the past, an audition of the SE is an absolute must (as it should be for any hi-fi purchase, actually).

Thanks for your answer Clare. I've always liked the RA-04 a lot so I'm definitely going to audition the RA-04SE.

I was thinking of upgrading my Rotel RA-06 to the new SE model but was a bit sceptical for that same reason. The WHF review is generally positive though and suggests that it represents a step-up sonically. But could the tweaking that's taken place also result in some aspects being worse than the previous model (the review mentions the poor definition at the low end for instance)? In other words, is a trade-off sometimes necessary when you upgrade to SE versions? Maybe it's better to stick with an older amp if you're generally happy with the sound you get from it.

Frankly, CG, I think an upgrade from RA-06 to the SE version would only be a relatively small step up. If you wanted to stay in the Rotel camp I'd be thinking of a more substantial move up...

This old debate, but I will use this rather then create new one.

I have a chance to buy two years old Rotel ra-04 for almost half a price of new 04SE.

Do you think new version is worth about 150 € more?

One more question. Hope my assumption is correct - rotel will play stereo music better them my denon 1911 receiver? Anyone tried both? My speakers are KEF IQ30.

Thank you for any suggestion.

Regards.

Firstly, if you can get hold of the original RA-04 at nearly half price then go for it. Not heard the SE version but my experience of 'SE', 'MKII', 'S' versions tend to be subtle ones.

I think the Rotel will have the edge on a receiver when it comes to stereo playback, but have no idea how it pairs with Kef speakers.
