I am having my Quad 34/405-2 restored to its original specification and then plan to use it with a Cyrus CD6SE and a pair of Spendor A5. Has anyone any experience of this combination.
I haven't owned the 34/405 (I had the 33/303 pair for a couple of years with some circa 1980 - pre body stocking - Mordaunt Short Festivals) but I have heard the FM4/44/405 with Quad ESL63's quite a lot in the past.
Although it was always an amazing sound, especially with radio*, I cannot comment on their use with conventional moving coil loudspeakers.
* The FM4/44/405/ESL63 together constituted the best 'radio' I have ever heard. Particularly with BBC. They were made for each other
I use my 405 with the Spendor SA1 to great effect. I would advise looking at the Netaudio mods you can get, notably the Dual Mono PSU upgrade. This will provide better current delivery which I believe the A5s will really benefit from. The other board changes offered will improve detail level, transparency and naturalness (with the Burr Brown OPA627 op amps).
