I want to buy some new front speakers,i have quad 11l fronts with a quad centre and old mordaunt short cs-1 as surrounds with a rel strata sub.with these i have a pio 428xd,yamaha rxv 1800,ps3 and a panasonic bd 35.Im leaning towards the quad 21's as my room is only 14x12,i've heard that the quad 22's need to be in a larger room and that they have to be at least 14ins from a wall is that to the back or to the front,if it's to the back they will stick out too far.I will use the 11l's as my surrounds which set of quads should i go for if the 21's are that much better than the 11's i will go for them, can anybody offer me some advice on this matter cheers.

My set-up is interestingly similar to yours: ÿPio 4280XD, Yamaha RX-V3800, Quad 12L2 (front), L2 (centre), L-ite (sub, surround & rear surround) in a 15 x 12 room. ÿAs you can probably guess, I began with the L-ite package and upgraded some of it. ÿAs far as I'm concerned, the results are fabulous - for movies anyway. ÿCompared with my hi-fi, the sound for music is perfectly listenable but a little lacking in definition.ÿ

ÿLike you, my understanding of the larger Quad floorstanders is that they sound best away from walls. ÿI've seen 22 inches quoted elsewhere. ÿThat would move them a good deal further out into the room than my 12L2s (on Soundstyle Z2 stands), looking rather silly and encroaching on my 'TV to sofa' distance. ÿThat is currently about 9' - about right for the Pioneer 42" as far as I'm concerned. ÿThe knock on would be lessÿspace behind the listening position and a less effective surround effect. ÿEven the 21Ls would need to be further away from the wall.

If you listen to a lot of music in Pure Direct, I think that the floorstanders might be worthwhile. ÿIf your using a sub anyway, they might be unnecessary. ÿCan you try out the effect in a similarly sized listening room or at home before you finally commit yourself? ÿI think I'd exercise caution.

Thanks for your reply on this matter, yeah the distance off the wall does worry me a lot.Would the 12l 2 be a better option,i'm just looking for a larger sound scale and dynamic range then i would not have to worry about moving them into the room.I do not know how much difference there is between the 11's to the 12's what do you think?

I really don't know - the best thing would be to get a good demo, I think. ÿThe 12L2s have a larger bass unit and have a wider dynamic range - better bass extension. ÿAs I said previously, I don't think my system lacks scale when it comes to movies. ÿThe dynamic range is incredible (eg The Dark Knight) but there's clarity and delicacy too. ÿ

If music reproduction is really important on this system, however, it might be worth trying the floorstanders too. ÿIt has to be your call in the end!

Ive used 11l and 12l as fronts and the 12's are a huge leap in terms of scale/weight over the 11l.
