Hello, I wonder if anybody could help me. I have purchased a PS3 and although I have already read various posts with similar questions, I am still not clear. My intention was to replace my DVD and iPOD by the PS3 but I am feeling that I am loosing a lot of quality so, I would like to know if this could be improved before returning it.

DVD player - I have a very old player Onkyo, I have connected the PS3 via optical. I have checked all the boxes in the sound options. I have played music and normal DVD and my feeling is that quality is worse than my old DVD player.

MP3 player - I have an IPOD connected to my receiver Onkyo 701E with B&W 685 via RCA. I have run comparison 1 to 1 with the IPOD and the quality of the PS3 is worse than the IPOD. I have set the music to bitstream 3.... I have tried with the various settings but really can not find much difference.

Questions - Is there any way to improve this specially the sound? Does the PS3 allow installation of other music player e. itunes where you can at least set equailzer options? My receiver does not accept HDMI. Many thanks and Merry Christmas

Hi, You mention connecting the PS3 via optical? What are you connecting to? What kind of files are you playing back from the PS3? A lot of people on here recommend changing the output on the PS3 to 44.1K rather than the 48K. Personally I think the PS3 sounds pretty good both via the analogue out and through an external DAC. My only issue is the fan noise and rubbish media management.

I must be the only one that thinks the PS3 is amazing.

I have mine hooked up to my amp and becuase I have the Fat one I have it on PCM.

Watched tons of dvd's and amazing upscale, and blu-ray sound and picture is amazing.

I have seen blu-rays in the shop and I cant really tell the difference in my PS3 and a proper blu-ray player.

I was going to buy one of those 80.00 360's from RS but thought to myself, waste of money.

I think it sounds VERY good. But I cant compare to an ipod as I dont have one.

For the record, all movies should be bitstreamed, unless its HD sound and a FAT PS3 in which case those must be converted to PCM first

Music I havnt really played about with that much but even without the extra cr*p switched on it sounds goo

OP ~ maybe the optical cable is really cheap cr*p?

(On a side note, I use a very good quality HDMI cable to feed all the sound and my PS3 is fed with a VERY good quality mains supply which made the biggest difference to sound by far)

It is amazing, and if it was a little bit quieter it would be the product of the century. Hopefully the next PS3 will be silent and I will open my wallet without a moments hesitation.
