PS3 Multi Channel Sound Output

I am very interested to buy a PS3 for playing Blue Ray Discs and upscaling to 1080p DVD discs, but i have read in it's manual that multi channel audio is only available trhough it's HDMI output ony and that it's optical output only gives stereo 2 channel! Is this true??? My Yamaha DSP-AX1 does not have an HDMI input so i will have a serious problem if the optical output only gives stereo sound! Please let me know if this is true! Thanks!! 🙂

You can get the old DTS and Dolby Digital formats through the optical, but not the new HD sound formats. I found the PS3's output through optical was really impressive, when coupled with HD video.
