Can anyone tell me if Sony are now selling the PS3 with HD audio? Been pondering over the Pioneer BDP-LX70a but don't want to dive in at £1000, so hearing that sony was going to firmware update to HD audio, has swung my decision back in favour of the PS3. but if i'm buying a new PS3 i'd rather do so knowing that its already capable of HD audio. thx all!

AFAIK, (I don't own one) the recent firmware updates have added decoding of all the HD audio formats to LPCM over HDMI.

The update is easily done over the internet. Guess it depends on how old the units in the shop are as to whether the unit you get has the firmware already on it.

It depends on when the stock was supplied to the store. Anything coming off the production line now should have it on but that doesn't mean that you'll get one with the update.

Even if it has been sitting around gathering dust for a while, just plug it in (including ethernet), switch it on, and after a prompt or two you will be ready to go. You'll still need an HD audio capable amp to make any sense of the signals, though.

If you can get access to a PC connected to the internet (at work or at a friends if you don't have it at home), you can download the latest firmware and put it on a USB storage stick / hard drive and update with this. Instructions for doing this are here. Also, the latest firmware is also included on some games and can be installed from these (as detailed here).

As long as you have internet connection wireless or lan connection you will be able to get latest firmware anyway,if your not bothered about gaming i would just go for a bluray player, saying that the ps3 is a great machine to own and theres upgrades all the time , plus ps home is coming soon.

I got my ps3 about 4 weeks ago, hooked it up to my internet connection via wired ethernet, went to the system update option in the menu and it downloaded the latest version, 2.3, which includes HD audio. Easy-peasey

On top of that it saw my pc straight away too so streaming audio, video etc is a breeze....oh and its a great blu-ray player and the games are pretty hot too!! The games controller is quite intuitive for controlling music, video, blu ray etc but I invested in a Sony 'normal' looking controller too, which makes it simpler and more 'wife-friendly'.

Yeah, but for anyone using the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player only and without an internet connection to plug it into (which is basically what the original post was about) the difference between 2.30 and 2.35 isn't worth worrying about.

Forgive my ignorance, but does this mean, if and when I buy a PS3 and the Neil Young Archives on Blu-Ray, I won't be able to access the HD audio content in my current Arcam A85/P90 set up? I think I know the answer already. . .

I currently use optical cable from ps3 to surround which sounds good, get yourself an av receiver onkyo 606 £400 then you'll have hd audio.
