PS3 Downscaling

My DVD player is playing up and so needs replacing. I am also thinking of getting a PS3. The TV at the moment is a 36" Panasonic Acuity, obvioulsy not HD. Will the PS3 downscale Blu-Ray to 576p componant? That way I can buy new films on Blu-Ray in anticipation of the eventual TV upgrade.
