Hey all sorry not sure where to post this🙂

Just installed a 500GB HDD (WD) to my PS3 my previous one was the one it came with which was 80GB(seagate)

now on the system info screen before upgrade i had 10GB of 74GB available with the 500Gb HDD i have 358GB of 465GB available now i did have issues installing the software on the HDD as the PS3 could not format it as it said it needed the latest update 3.15 it took my thick head a few attempts to realise i needed to get this from sony and put it in a update folder on a mem stick. My restore file i.e my data is 54.3GB.

I am thinking that the HDD has not been formatted correctly or as it is a bigger drive the software installed by the ps3 is less compressed? i will try to format it again via the PS3 then buy a dock for the HDD so i can see what my laptop makes of it!

I would of course like to be able to use all of the data available and 43Gb is a lot of memory so any input will be much appreciated🙂

many thanks

It may well be as a result of using a bigger drive, what's known as the block size will have increased (effectively the smallest amount of space a file can take up on the disk) and this is effectively means the same amount of data stored on a smaller drive with a smaller block size will take up more space on a larger drive with a larger block size. I don't know the details of this when it comes to the PS3, and I'm pretty sure you can't change it, but it would definitely explain the above.

You can try formatting and restoring again, but it might just be this is now the amount of space your data will take up. Remember, you still have 358 GB free compared to your 10 GB previously so it's definitely a worthwhile procedure!

Hi Snakey.

First of all, Hard Drive manufacturers advertise their drive's capacity in the formula that 1kb = 1000bytes (decimal system). Computers (and the PS3) use the formula that 1kb = 1024 bytes (binary system). Because of this, even though the capacity is still the same, the PS3 will read it differently to how the manufacturers read it.

It works at a different rate for differing capacity levels too :

At the KB level, the computer reads the disk as roughly 2.4% lower than the manufacturers quoted capacity.

At the MB level, the computer reads the disk as roughly 4.8% lower than the manufacturers quoted capacity.

At the GB level, the computer reads the disk as roughly 7.2% lower than the manufacturers quoted capacity. etc.etc.

So....your 500GB HDD is showing as roughly 7% lower than what Western Digital quote - 465GB. I've got a 640GB WD Blue Scorpio in one of my PS3 fatboys, and the PS3 says that the available space is 596GB !

Then the PS3 reserves between 10% and 15% of the HDD for "Administrative" use, depending on the Drives capacity. For your 500GB HDD, this is about 11% to 12%.

SO !! let's say 11% of 465GB is 51.2GB:

465GB - 51.2GB (PS3 Reserve Space) - 54.3GB (Your restore data) = 359.5GB

That's not far off your quoted figure of 358GB available space left.....

Hope that helps !!

hey THE_FORCE

yeah i thought it may be something along those lines i knew that i would not get 500Gb and the 465Gb is roughly what i would expect i just did not know that the PS3 also uses 10 to 15% for administrative use (by the way what exactly is that?) so thanks very much for the info
