Depends what you mean by turned on ? and what HD box you have?

If it's one of the older models it needs to be powered up at the mains(obviously), but will wake from stand-by to record ...

If it's one of the newer 500GB/1TB models,as well as the normal stand-by(as above),these have an "Off"mode that is basically a deep stand-by/low power mode (to conform to EU reg's) which is selected by pressing the power button for 5+ seconds and will not wake up to record etc when in this mode!

Don't know about your sky HD box but with a humax foxsat hdr you have a choice of either on or off, couldn't you test it, surely you would now if it was recording or not.

Answer is, no need to turn it of, as with all new HD boxs they have an automatic turn of to stand by, if you leave the box on and are not using it, so no fear your programs will be recorded, even a whole series. Which means that when your away on hols, the box will keep recording what you have programed it to record.
