I have read the review of ProAc D40R - obviously great speakers. I am currently running ProAc D18 with Supernait and I am quite happy with them ( may be sometimes missing more bass). I am thinking if D40R are an option for speakers upgrade. My question is will Supernait be able to drive D40Rs enough well in order to get best out of them. Did somebody hear such a combo ?

Hi martingo

In all fairness i think D40/R's are likely to benefit from even higher quality of amplification eg. NAP 250 however (particularly if you're not after disco like listening levels) the Supernait should do a good job at driving D40/R's.

Btw, for a worthwhile upgrade over the D18's also consider D28's.

All the best

I think you'll need something better than a Supernait to get the best out of the D40/Rs. It's not that they're particularly difficult to drive, more that they're immensely revealing and capable of huge dynamic swings when driven by something of suitable quality.

Thanks to both for the feedback. I see both of you with doubts about the ability of Supernait to get best of D40R ! And what about the new ProAc D30R ( which were just posted as specifications on their site). Will they be a better match with Supernait ? And also a good upgrade of D18 ?

Supernait power output of 80W is not enough for the D30R or D40R . You'll need a robust amp or monobloks to drive them .

As told above I think the D28 is a better option for you .

I haven't heard the D30/R yet, but ProAc's track record is good. Getting the best from the D40/Rs is as much about amplifier quality as it is power output.

The Supernait will be able to do an adequate job with either the 30R or 40R but IMO it won't be a very good match. I've found that ProAc speakers with ribbon tweeters work well with pure class A amplification, perhaps the Sugden Masterclass integrated or the MF AMS 35i at the very least.

If however, you would rather keep the Naim but still go for a higher ProAc model, then perhaps the D40 without the ribbon might be better.

Hi Singslinger

Have you heard the D40R with the AMS 35i? They could be my next project in the future.

Thanks

Hi iceman16, no I haven't heard that combination but I'm using Accuphase class A amps to drive my ProAc k6 speakers with excellent results, hence my guess that a class A amp of equivalent quality would work well with the 40R.
