HI

The problem i have with my Pro-ject Genie MK1 turntable is, it plays through 1 channel (right speaker). In regards to to the left channel the sound is not as clear or as loud as the right channel.
i switched the RCA phono leads at the TT so the red goes in white input and vice versa, but still hardly any souun or clarity in the left channel, what could this mean?

My RCA phono has an attached earth cable. What i did was remove just the RCA phonos and attached a different RCA interconnect, but left the earth cable connected to the TT and the pre-amp. The sound was still the same, with the other interconnect, which never had an attached earth,

i have a CD player also connected to this amp and the sound is perfect in both channels.

Did you switch the cable at both ends or only one?

What's the amp? Does it have a phono stage? If not, stick the CD into the input you're using for the TT and see if it has the same problem. If the amp DOES have a phono stage do NOT do this! If it does have a phono stage you'll need to find another TT to test if it's the input on the amp that has the problem.

I only switched the cable at the TT end

Right, so out of the speakers the left channel music is now coming from the right speaker and vice versa but the problem remains on the left channel (ie the left speaker is still sounding muffled)?

If that's the case then it's the left channel input on the amp that's gone. If the problem moves to the right speaker it's the left channel output on the TT.

You don't have a separate phono stage you could use to plug the TT in the CD input to check?

No my amp only has the one phono stage.

"You don't have a separate phono stage you could use to plug the TT in the CD input to check?" - i thought plugging into the CD input was not advisable ?

sorry a bit slow today

could I connect the TT, through a separate phono stage, plugged into another input stage, eg AUX, tape as the CD input stage is alreay taken

Yes that's what I meant, although I was only suggesting it as a temporary test, so the CD would only need to be unplugged for a couple of minutes. If it confirms a problem with the amp I'd probably be investigating if it can be fixed, rather than working around it (although if you wanted an upgraded/better phono stage to improve the TT performance it's probably not a bad excuse to do so).

Sorry to butt-in The_Lhc but could the problem be cartridge rather than amp.

Amar21, do you have another cartridge you could connect temporarily to check its doing the same thing?

I don't suppose it's something as basic as the position of the balance control on the amp is it? Has this been checked?

That's true.

Apart from the CD player being fine.
