The new PM 6006 Marantz amp ( 45 W / 8 Ohm ) has a power consumption

of 395 W vs the 155 W of 6004/5 predecessor, Class AB ( US site )

but 155 W in other countries sites ??? *wacko*

The new Nad amps : from 290 W of C326 ( 50 W / 8 Ohm, Class AB ) to 100 W of C368 ( 80 W / 8 Ohm , Class D) .

A good class D design should be north of 90% efficient, as it only dissipates a fraction of the heat in its output stages that a A or AB does.

Having said that, it is quite impressive that the NAD produces 80W (per channel?) = 160W with an input of only 100W. Free energy..... I knew Sir Isaac Newton had got it wrong.

That is not tru it also uses 155 W (uk site), don't look at the american site

It's still 155 Watts according to Marantz's own specs on their own PM 6006 webpage ...

Clicky

EDIT. Sorry. didn't se the post above mine. (I didn't read that far after i'd checked the Marantz website.)

HiFi News magazine measued 180w consumption at 45w output, if that helps.

The assumption being that this particular amplifier will typically be used at full output by it's owners? What a stupid measurement.

Firstly it won't be full output, it's merely the point they took to measure at a reasonable THD. Moreover TBH amplifiers at this price point and power are much more likely to be used near the limit. Look at it this way a 20 year old wants a first amp goes into a shop buys what is the present darling at the price point and swiftly goes home. At that point the 20 year like most of us when we were that age thrash it to within a inch of it's life.

I think it was only shown in comparison to the published spec, chebby. That was why I posted it, to be helpful - or so I thought. They usually measure the idle and standby too, but I'm not going to look that up!

Maybe a 6006 owner could actually measure the quiescent / tickover / blasting mains consumption.

If it gets very hot it will be wasting a lot of power, if it doesn't it won't be. Power consumption figures on a class AB amplifier like those quoted are pretty meaningless, but required under EU rules.
