I might have got the wrong end of the stick here, well here goes.

Generally happy with my new 50" LG tv, which I have been content watching Bluray and hd content from my WD tvlive. However when my partner stating watching her miss marple dvd series, I was shocked how poor and grainy this looked. Yes I know its a big tv and I am viewing from 2.5 metres, but is my bluray player letting me down in the upscaling stakes and if so what can I do?

Should I get a decent dvd player dedicated for just dvd and upscaling, or a new bluray player?

I have a pioneer bdp320 bluray player

Hi Woodster,

Upscaling really does depend on the quality of the disc. Miss Marple i would assume is a very grainy example to begin with. Bet there are 4 or more episodes per disc meaning it has been compressed to a very low bit rate. Think 4hrs on DVD recorder, they recommend 1hr per disc for quality.

Try any StarWars, anything but Phantom Menace, these are great transfers and should bring out the best in your scaler. Seriously really does depend on transfer with video scaling.

Oh, and calibrate it with a good disc, a few quid to get the best from your kit. Im a 'Philips' tv man and they take some calibrating but once they are right, they can be amazing.

Also try turning the scaling off on your player (set to 576p) and let your LG try the scaling. Sometimes it can be better.

Good Luck

Your right on the four episodes thing there buddy, yep ultra compressed I guess. She was actually not moaning just me being fussy. Shall try your advice, but I think you hit nail on the head there first time.

I asked a similar question on one of the other boards. Just recently bought a 55 inch Samsung and a Sony BDP S370. Watched a copy of Withnail and I that I got free with the newspaper and the upscaling was terrible. Really grainy and awful ghosting/trailing, which I hadn't noticed with other DVD's I'd watched. To be honest, I didn't know that quality of DVD/Blu Ray's varied by transfer. I thought DVD quality was DVD quality, but then again, what do I know? Thanks for clearing this up for me. Will also be turning the scaling off and seeing if that makes a diff.

Cheers.
