slewis:If you want freeview HD try looking at the panasonic G20 range, the V20 range & the VT20 range will be out later in the year.

The TVs you're suggesting will cost at least twice the OP's budget.

You really need to decide if you prefer LCDs or plasmas. If LCDs, look at the Sony & Samsung range. Panasonic makes some very good plasma TVs.

Right thanks for the replies.

Im not to sure between lcd or plasma. Plasmas looked alot brighter and better PQ in the shops next to lcd. But all the info is to much to take in lol.

What would you suggest just for watching sky and the odd blue ray movie now and again.

Thanks again

bigboss:Amongst the TVs you've suggested, Samsung LE40B550 is the best option in my opinion.

I agree with Bigboss, and the 40 inch samsung's have always been nice going back 3 or 4 years.

freeview hd is only going to appear on the new 2010 range of tvs , its highly unlikely that any of them at 40in will fall to £450 , even this time next year , you would be lucky to get one at that price ..

even freesat tvs from last year are all over your budget at 40in , if you need to buy soon , and cant up your budget , then id reccomend the samsung 40b550 lcd or the panasonic 42x10 plasma ..

are you sure it was the plasmas that you thought looked brighter in the shops ?? its normally lcds that look the best in a bright shop envoirement , i would double check that ..

also bear in mind , that if you watch tv in a brightly lit room then lcd tech is the best for you , at least at your budget , but if you prefer watching with the lights off , plasmas tend to look their best , with a more natural picture..

Hi Right i have narrowed my new tv down to 3 so just wondering if anyone could tell me the best one. I will only be using it for SD viewing and a blue ray movie now and again.

i wouldnt normaly reccomend an lcd over a plasma , but given your choices , i think the samsung might be a better bet , its very good with sd , and its 1080p full hd , when you do watch blu-rays you will appreciate that , and in a few years when theres more hd channels ..

the panny is fine for sd , but being only 720p or hd ready , it wont be as sharp or show as much detail when watching blu-rays and hd tv , also , compared to the g and v series pannys the x range are not as punchy , not as bright , i think in this case the samsung may give you more vibrancy and hd enjoyment...

Received my Samsung LE40B550 on the strength of recent reviews and it is superb and absolutely cracking value for money (£525)! it was definately a step up from my 3 yr old HD Ready 40" Samsung LCD, even on the SD content. Couldnt comment on the Panasonic Plasma, but I'm glad I've changed from HD Ready to Full HD tv. this is not just because of the fantastic pictures you get with BluRay, but also the improvement in the handling of SD over the air pictures. I know that generally the Plasma format handles motion better than LCD (or at least used too!), but last months WHF Supertest is a good comprison with all the LCD's easily outperforming the Panasonic Plasma.

watching sport, the close up views were very good and it only suffered from a lack of definition on wider shots. I think this is ultimately down to the quality of the signal and SD resolution rather than refresh rate. Feed it a HD signal (as it was designed for) and the picture is top notch, in my opinion. depending on the programme and channel, some of the SD images are a match in terms of quality to the HD over the airwaves content.

I think Amazon are now selling the LE40B550 for £495!

Hope this helps,

Nick
