Hi everyone, desperate for some help! Onkyo SA605 amp Sony bdp s-760 blue ray Panasonic TH50pz81b Tv I have been using this system perfectly for over 12 months now and very impressed, all the HD Audio formats have been working perfectly until I installed my sky HD box via hdmi and had to reset the full system up (because of old birds nest syndrome). But now all I can get is DTS and DSP modes from the system which shows audio input at the front of the amp. I watched Avatar yesterday with no HD audio on display! Please please help with the settings as i cant find either instruction book! should i be also connecting via hdmi or optical for bitsteam as i know the amp accepts hd audio via bitstream

Did you change any menu settings? Posting them might help someone spot something amiss if you have changed them.

What mode is the amp in? Obviously it should be in Auto

You can download manuals from the manufacturer's websites.

If you have changed anything in the player, that would be the first place I checked. Is it set to bitstream?

As I said, post your audio settings.

You need to set the bluray player to send bitstream for dolby digital and dts.

I notice that the 605 has a Pure Direct on the front of the unit; press this to get rid of the DSP modes as it bypasses any unnecessary processing for audio. This will also tell you what type of signal is coming into the amp -you can check by cycling through the 'display' .

One of your settings was 'audio priority opt/coax (?) but don't you want to hav audio via HDMI?!

Note that Sky do not send 5.1 sound via HDMI - only stereo! So if you want full surround from your Sky box you need to attach the box via optical digital to your amp and check the Sky settings for this.

If you have a spare HDMI input on your tv, you can connect the sky box directly but pass the surround sound onto the amp as described. (This is what I do).

You need to scrap the idea of optical/coaxial as these connections do not carry HD sound. HDMI between Player and Amp. If you want bitstream (which means the player just passes the signal to the amp for unpacking/decoding) I think the player will have a 'Sound Output' setting either called bitstream or direct. If you want pcm (which means the player will unpack the HD format and pass the pcm stream to the amp) there must be a setting called pcm. Either option should work with your amp.

Thanks Shreddy,
I am sure I originaly used optical to recieve the hd audio formats and they were actually displayed on the main screen of the amp, as like i said on the earlier post, any ideas how to send the signal bitsream other than direct?

No you didn't as that is impossible seen as optical doesn't support them.

I think Bulloy's problem lies in the settings on the player - further up the page there is this setting:

Audio out put priority Coax/opt

Change that to HMDI and hook up player to amp using a HDMI cable, there is no need to even have the optical cable connected. You DO however need an optical/coaxial from the Sky box to the amp for DolbyD out of the Sky.

Sounds like he has the wrong settings selected. I know how he feels....my Onkyo receiver is away for an upgrade and I just got a Sony 2400ES receiver on loan....took me an hour to get everything set up properly for Sky HD and Blu ray

I have downloaded your bluray player manual and checked the settings you posted.

They are all correct EXCEPT for 'Audio Priority' which must be set to hdmi. As stated by others, hi-def audio can only be transmitted via hdmi and not optical nor coax digital.

You should check that you only use an hdmi cable between the sony and the onkyo so remove any optical/coax which may also be connected.

Then check the onkyo: you need to check that the input channel you use for the sony is 'assigned' (configured) to accept an hdmi input (e.g. hdmi1 if you use hdmi1 as the input from the sony (I know it sounds bleedin obvious!)) ...

...and that the audio for this channel is also set to hdmi.

Just out of interest, once you have set both sets of settings, turn off both devices and switch them on to check these settings are being retained.

Then play a movie with say DTS HD Master audio, and press the 'Pure Direct' on the front of the onkyo when the main movie starts.

NOTE the onkyo's display should disappear (as part of the pure setting) but by pressing 'display' on the remote or front you can force the display momentarily and repeated quick pressing cycles through info one of which should read DTS-HD Master 5.1.

Hope this works. Please post to tell us if you are sorted.
