Play fi problems

Hi. I looked DTS PlayFi a few years ago when considering some Arcam equipment. The trouble was with this system ( and I’m pretty sure it is still a problem…) is that all the music goes through the control device…whether a phone, tablet or whatever. Unlike DLNA where the control device is just that…and music goes from say a server straight to the renderer. This was a deal breaker for me.
The 6000N is DLNA and UPNP compliant and so will work with any DLNA app such as BubbleUPNP on Android, or MConnect on iOS.
Getting Apple Music working is of course a whole other can of worms….🙂

Yeah iam aware of other folks finding play fi has issues with other services, it's one of the reasons ive stuck with spotify as the connect seams to avoid many of the problems with the play fi. Hopefully compatability will be improved over time, hopefully someone knows a way around the issue, its so annoying to have a great product let down by its opperating app............

Play-Fi is owned by DTS and, to conserve their own interests, I don’t see the platform evolving much, even if the 6000N is an excellent sounding streamer. I don’t even think Tidal Connect is currently on the cards.

I have bought a 6000a+6000n yesterday and I’m returning it to the shop. The 6000n, although sounding great, is basically unusable from if you do not use Spotify with Spotify connect (and you don’t want to use Spotify after buying such piece of equipment) .

The play-fi app takes minutes to find the device, does not support gapless playback and also drops the connection. in the absence of air-play, you need to go through play-fi to use other apps such as tidal or Qobuz. I really do not understand how they can have design such a complicated and inefficient system while nearly all other brands simply support airplay.
Audio quality is worthless if it impossible to use as it ruins all of your experience.

Yeah it's such a shame that a great piece of kit is so badly let down by the app, i use 6000a play & 6000n with apotify connect & it's been faultless to be honest, but it is a major limitation to be limited to one streaming service........if i wasn't using spotify id have gone the bluesound route.......😁

I am returning an Audiolab Omnia due to the Play-Fi app. Even when it "works" after about an hour or so it starts to drop out. I will look to replace with something that doesn't use Play-Fi. I don't want something that you need to be an expert to get to work properly, just something that streams the music hassle free.

AudioLab Omnia for a few months has worked really well but now getting a buggy connection. All sorts of strange things happening. On top of that or maybe part of that, sometimes I cannot switch tha unit off, either using the off switch on the unit or the remote (have to pull the main plug).

I’ve tried the usual uninstalling/reinstalling Spotify and Playfi and things work, for about 15 minutes and then drop outs and eventually loss of all connection.

I’m tempted to take the damn thing back but prefer just to get it working.

Any thoughts?

That does sound like it is a problem with the unit, personally if it’s under warranty I’d definitely be taking it back, something as simple as an on off switch should work without fault. As I’ve mentioned using Spotify connect I’ve never had an issue with either of my devices dropping out. I would initially contact the retailer that originally sold you the unit, Hope you get it sorted😀🙏

I had constant drop outs with PlayFi on my Omnia, using Windows 10 and 11 until I obtained a licence key from DTS and I could then stream at high quality and it was much better, for a while. I started getting drop outs again and it became really annoying. The bloke at Phorus support advised the app wasn't getting any further investment or updates for Windows and he suggested I use the app on an Android or Apple device. I've been running the app on my phone for months now with no issues. To avoid the drop outs previously, I'd been using bluetooth between my laptop and the Omnia and although the connection was rock solid, the quality was inferior and so obvious when flipping between this and the network connection using PlayFi. I use my laptop and my PC to choose music via Spotify Connect and it's so intuitive and a pleasure to use now. I'm not sure why anyone would be experiencing drop outs if they are not using PlayFI on a Windows based device. The only thing I could imagine causing this would be poor connection via wireless. My 5G broadband is at least 200Mb/s and often double this and it's all stable. Anyone suffering drop outs could be getting poor connection speeds perhaps. If a LAN cable is being used with high speed broadband then I've no idea. I've had several updates on my Omnia and I believe it's now gapless and much quicker to respond. All my Spotify and DTS PlayFi settings are the highest possible quality available and it does sound amazing. Just wating for the HIFI quality Spotify platform now. My Omnia has also frozen a few times and needed a full power drain and it seems OK these days. This has happened when my living room has been fairly cool so I don't think it's a temperature issue. I know it can't be heat, because I have my laptop sat on top of my Omnia, fitting perfectly as though they were made for each other and both devices are under a south facing window without any curtains etc. It's about 21C right now and it seems OK. My laptop is currently too hot to touch in the direct sunlight and it's blocking all the ventilation holes on the Omnia. Neither is struggling. I think many devices, including amplifiers cope with heat much better than people think. If you feel it's too warm, you then imagine it's also too warm for your amp. The operating temperature of amps is way above what a human could tolerate, even for a few minutes.
