Good job I write these in notepad first and paste, again it didn't upload first one

Chaps,

Just want to check i'm not being over picky here and so wanted some opinions on image retention on a plasma:

1. Is it normal to still see a static image, ie a logo after 1.5 hours of watching something and then still have it on screen in the morning and have to run the scrolling bar for two hours to get rid of it?
2. Is it normal to still see an image, ie lottery numbers on screen 5 minutes after you have got rid of the screen and checked your numbers?
3. Is it normal to still see a static image after being on screen for only 10 mins and have to run the scrolling bar for two hours to get rid of it?

I'm thinking no to all three as I didn't have that issue on my previous plasma, but do on my 6 month old one

Any idea's

Cheers

Rocket

I don't get any of those issues on my plasma no. You're not running in some idiotic Dynamic mode or something like that are you?

Sadly no, I'm using the THX certified option for films and other programs, and Cinema with the pixal orbitor on, colour balance normal or warm and all other settings about half (think I just moved contrast down so its with the rest) everything else is turned off, for some programs and gaming. Thing is even if I turn brightness and contrast down to 0 I still get it when I have a static image on a game for 5-10 mins.

Which plasma TV have you now, and which one had you previously?

Hi Son_of_SJ

Recent TV is a Panny 50"GT50, old TV (now in conservatory) is a Panny 42"G20. I've had a few recent issues with IR on my GT50 that frankly I don't recall having at all on my G20

Cheers

They are a bit sensitive to IR in the first 200 hours, how long have you had the set?

Hi Paul

I've had it 6 months, annoyinly IR only became an issue in the last 2-3 weeks. No problems at all before then with it. I think its well passed 200 hours now

I am being very careful with mine, don't have it on Sky Sports News for long, or else it will get image retention! Out of interest are you a gamer?

Hi Gel,

Yeah, I'm a gamer. Its how I first noticed the issue. It took me 7 days and 5-6 hours a day using the scrolling bar effect to get rid of my first IR issue, since then I just seem to get it very easily now. I only used it for 5 mins this morning and I got IR which took 2 hours to clear using the scrolling bar. I'm starting to use the scrolling bar everyday now just to clear something, I can get to the setting blind folded!

If I were in your position, I'd call the retailer and report the problem immediately. I think it's in your best interests to do this tomorrow and get details of the problem on record.

When you say six months, can you be more specific? Technically, under the sale of goods act, within six months of purchase the onus is on the retailer to prove the goods were not faulty at the point of sale. The retailer can offer a refund, replacement, or repair. If you encounter resistance, direct the retailer here:

And here:

http://www.oft.gov.uk/business-advice/treating-customers-fairly/sogahome/sogaexplained/

Where did you buy from?

There was no way this TV was designed for gaming. I knew from the three I have owned there is no way you would not get image retention from playing games on it. I would do like Strapped has said and try getting it replaced but I definitely would not play games on the new one.

My GT50 is around 2 months old. IR raised it's ugly head a few weeks ago, and I had to run the scrolling bar through the night, then watch tv normally for another day before it finally went.

I'd only been watching Sky Sports for around an hour, then I got the problem. Since then, I've lowered the contrast and brightness further, and any channel with a bold logo is either avoided, or in the case of sport, I zoom the picture in until the logo has gone. I've stated on another thread that I am only prepared to do this until the end of March, then it's back to some normal viewing. If the problem resurfaces, I'll be straight on to John Lewis and tell them that I consider the tv faulty.

It seems ridiculous to me that after paying a grand for a highly regarded tv, I have to resort to such drastic measures to avoid damaging the screen,

It sounds like you've been sensible with your settings, so there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to watch tv without fear of IR.

If I was you, I'd do exactly what Strapped For Cash said, contact your retailer, and if it's under 6 months that you've had the tv, push for at least a replacement.

This is the exact same issue I got with my GT30 after exactly the same period of time and i'm a gamer too....that can't be a coincidence can it?? Whenever I played a game the HUD would be the worst offender with just 5-10mins of gaming being enough to get IR and being able to see the HUD for the next few days, I too used the scrolling bar to shift it and often left it on over night to shift the IR and it did do the job but it shouldn't be necessary to do it imo.

People who don't use a recent Panny plasma for gaming don't tend to get the IR issue so i'm of the opinion that gaming is the cause of the problems. In the end I got a very strange clouding effect on my GT30 which i'm sure was due to the build up of IR and the amount of time I was using the scrolling bar to shift it and perhaps because I was gaming on it quite often, that's just guess work though.

I had the panel replaced under warranty but that didn't solve the issues so I battled with my retailer and got a Sony 46HX853 as a replacement and that has been great with no issues like I had on my GT30. That GT30 was my 3rd set and it was fine up until the 6 month mark when all these issues started and when I used the engineers menus and checked the hours on the panel it was on 562 hours so it was well run in by then.

I don't know what it is but i'm convinced that recent Panny plasmas and gaming don't mix, everyone I know on these forums and personally who has one but doesn't use it for gaming very often or at all has never had an issue...very strange. I loved my GT30 but as i'm a keen gamer I just couldn't use a Panny plasma anymore for fear of yet more issues and after your issues with the GT50 i'm glad I didn't get a GT50 which is what I was going to do.

As strapped has said it's time to report it to your retailer and get it looked at, it's under warranty so it's best you get it looked at asap to get the issue resolved, I really hope you get a resolution soon as I know exactly how frustrated you must be right now :wall:

Can anyone post some pics of the IR problems they're experiencing?

I'm interested to see how severe the issue is. HDTV Test did an IR comparison, pitting 2012 Panasonic plasmas against 2012 Samsung plasmas. The Samsung sets performed better in this regard.

I've had what I would describe as very minor IR on both GT50s I've owned, induced by gaming. I wouldn't describe any of these incidences as alarming and on the occasions IR did occur, it cleared up very quickly.

I'm not suggesting for a second that you're both exaggerating the issue. It sounds like Sky logos induce this problem more often and more severely than Freeview/Freesat channel logos. I guess I've also been lucky, in this sense at least.

I found that bright logos or game HUDs against a dark background caused all manner of issues, playing Fifa for example was a real issue as the EA logo caused serious amounts of IR. Any Sky channel was another culprit as the logos tend to be bright on dark backgrounds and when watching the footie the score cards you get in the top corners of the screen were another major cause of IR...I could go on and on with examples but basically bright logos on a dark background gave me awful IR issues.

It is hard to find a channel now that doesn't have some kind of logo

I don't game on this tv, I wouldn't dare. I used to use the Kuro to play Wii golf, and never had a hint of a problem, even if I played for hours.

If the op is correct about getting IR after just 5 minutes of use, there's something seriously wrong with the GT

I know, it's anti-plasma.

Some are ok, but some are just taking the mickey.

Is the GT series simply not fit for purpose then if you can't or wouldn't dare use it for gaming? The tv has a game mode and there is no warnings in any of the documentation that says you shouldn't use it for gaming just a very vague warning about not having static images on the screen for a long time.

I agree, my GT30 had IR after just 5-10mins use...that surely isn't right and must be pointing towards some sort of inherent fault? It's strange that not all users are affected though as many have never reported any IR, as far as I know gel for eample has had no issues with his GT50 :?

Rather sad really that the TV almost dictates which channels you can or cannot watch.

Exactly...that can't be right for anyone affected by the issue and must be considered faulty imo.

I was seriously considering getting a GT50 but after doing some online research on various sites including this one I have shelved the idea.

I really cannot be asked to go through 2 or 3 sets in the hope of getting one that performs as it should, it should not be to much to ask surely that the set performs correctly.

I'm afraid if I had bought one that was faulty the retailer would have had one chance to put it right.

I don't really want to be the QC department for a TV manufacturer.
