Pioneer to move away from AV altogether?

It's no surprise really.

Whether you like their AV amps or not (I don't - most I've experienced have been overpriced and artificially bright sounding), the AV amp market is like the TV market they departed.

No one actually gives a toss about quality, just festoon the product with features/badges/specs that a mail order website or journalist can waffle on about.

If they stuck to the principles of performance-first (like with say the old Kuro range and early high end AV amps), they could distinguish themselves from the mass-market dross. But sadly they can't so it's no surprise and no great loss IMHO

Fair comment, will be a crying shame if they don't do what Panasonic did with the ZT, and bring out a 'curtain call' Top end AV receiver that includes HDMI2. Doesn't look likely though.

Yep. How expensive was that! And it weighed a ton!

Retailed at £5000 on release I believe, having read up on it I wouldn't mind one as my next amp, though they are very rarely available for sale on the likes of Av Forums or eBay.

Will there be an SC-LX88 next year or is the 87 going to be Pioneer's last flagship receiver?

Don't know to be honest, why are you interested in getting one?

Yep, I'll end up getting the 87 if that's their last flagship receiver, or the 88 if they make one more, assuming I can't find a Susano 2nd hand for a reasonable price. No great rush though, still more than happy with my 83.

Awesome I'll start saving for it today! I see it also has HDMI 2.0 and a "learning remote" - something like a Harmony? I was hoping they'd bring back the RF remote for this model.

The Susano SCLX-90 seems a bit too rare and I'd sooner have something more up to date anyway.

Other than the first post and yours, I've not read the thread, so apologies if I'm repeating anything.

I've said many times that the AV industry is on the decline, and this just goes to prove how cut throat it is becoming. I believe Pioneer are ditching the AV industry to pursue the two channel market, which is on the increase. AV only dealers, beware.

The big question on my mind is whether it will be the same people creating future Pioneer amps, or whether we will see somithing similar to Denon / Marantz where the receivers are almost identical.

I hope it's the former as this gives us AV nuts more choice.

Yes, I think I read somewhere that it would be keeping the DJ stuff, but what I find more bizarre is that it can make more profit on sales direct to car manufacturers for line-fit systems than it can selling AV receivers and the like through consumer channels. I think that's just sheer scale at work, think of how many million cars are made each year (it's well over 65 million now) and think if they only get 1% of that market (and they probably get a lot more than 1%) it's probably more units than their entire annual AV receiver sales figures (I've got nothing to back that up with though I admit).

I had a Pioneer A400 amp that was updated in the UK with some component changes, it had power in droves & had no frills which I liked, as I remember it was rather good but on the bright side - End of an era.
