Has anyone compared the Pioneer BDP-LX55 against other Blu-ray players? And what were your thoughts?

Many thanks

i havn't got one myself but have you tried searching the forums?

Hi

Cheers for the reply, I have seen a couple of people have got one in their sig, and I have read about others upgrading to 3D by purchasing one. WHF review very complementary - only review I can find, which surprises me a little. Just seen another new Pioneer Blu-ray player being announced on their website for October - looks like it carries similar spec.

Not sure - I am only really interested in 2D and the sound quality and DVD compared with others.

Cheers

i think it stands up very well against most,i was looking at a few reviews of the bdp last night, there were a few concerns over bugs tho,but a guy on the forum who has one stated that a new firmware sorted the problems.

doesn't your avr do the sound decoding?

Hi

Yep, but I have heard clear differences still in sound between different Blu-ray players and this amp, so I am interested in how it sounds but have no place to demo.

I udated from a BDP 51fd similar to your 71 performance wise i believe.

To cut a long story short is it better yes...... i found it subtle at first but gradually with source material i was familer with i started to tell differences. DVD picture was quite noticeably improved and for blu ray i noticed quite a reduction in noise grain (Black swan was like a different film on the 55) and the colour palette has a greater defined presence which i've observed on Michael Fassbenders beret in Inglourious Basterds , The colour of the green space suits in Alien (didn't even realise they were green before). Also i noticed really improved detail in the opening shot of Aliens were the ice is on the chairs and equipment. One particular scene in Inglourious is when the bear jew come out the tunnel the medals round his neck shimmered to blur on the 51 but stay clearer and more defined on the 55. Soundwise i would say it's marginally better but i wasn't sure to start with (can't really explain this i just put it down to burn in in the end). GSB as i've said before SACD is fantastic and it was the one thing i noticed straight away as being a massive improvement on my elder pioneer 575ai DVD player (51 didn't do SACD).

I was initially going to go Arcam BDP100 (bad reviews) then Oppo 95 but wasn't going to use analog so then Oppo 93 just at the point when i was going to get it the 55 was announced and in the states the Elite equivalent is refered to as the Flagship model (91 does not exist on the Japanese or USA sites). To my observations the 55 does what the Oppo does minus analog that i won't ever use and was cheaper so went for the Pioneer. TBH initially i did wish i had got an Oppo but i perservered with the Pioneer and with the second Firmware update i'm happy to say i don't have any hankerings to get an Oppo anymore :)

Ah brilliant - thanks for that! I have just sold my second player the Pioneer lx70a so I was looking at whether to roll the dice again, and heard it was better from a shop but never to sure what to think from a shop, but that is excellent cheers!

Hi. Just thought that i'd point out we've got a Group test of BD players, including the Pioneer together with the latest models from Panasonic and Sony in the Sept issue of the mag. It's on sale this Friday, if my memory serves me correctly...

I have the Pioneer BDP LX 55. This is my second unit in 5 months as the first one stopped playing any blu rays and in the end would not even load a disc. My second unit is latest firmware and yes it is very good in all aspects except for Lyp synch issues which my original player had. This is where the LX 55 falls down. It doesn't happen on all discs but it does with the majority. I was hoping the latest firmware would sort this but alas not really.

I thought the group test was really good too. I decided not to purchase it based on the sound quality of it as my current one has quality dacs inside.

Many thanks again.

The LX55 definately needs a new firmware - however I think the performance is very strong - despite the player only getting 4 stars - that was only for the sound - discussed with What hifi personally about it.

I have owned the LX71 and the LX54 before the LX55. I wasnt totally happy with the 54 so upgraded to the 55.

I got the 54 free with my LX83 and demo'd against the LX71 on my LX5090 - to me the 54 was much sharper and pqls sound was somehting I couldnt live without once I had heard it

I have since calibrated my LX5090 was not at the time of that decision - I may not have kept the 54, I am not sure, I also sit a long way away so my decision was based with that in mind - picture at about 13 foot distance

I get to see the LX08 quite a lot on a Panasonic 50G20 Plasma - same player as LX71 - its a great player, you get a very soft cinema like picture with big and bold sound- very dynamic sounding

However I find with the LX55 you get a better picture in most ways and the sound with PQLS is far more refined, and layered hard to describe this without hearing it. Its one of those you turn it off, think for a minute its better with it off, then always turn it back on again and leave it

Its a much faster player as well.

Plays most blu rays perfectly - the odd bit of lip sync in some I have noticed, its bad in some films which is a bit pants but no the majority of films, the odd ones

1 more firmware update and it will be hopefully perfect - the LX71 has had about 6 updates so it takes Pioneer a while to get it right I find. We are due one, every 3- 4 months

I found the Pioneer players to trounce the likes from Panasonic a few years ago - it could be very different now

I dont reget owning the Pioneer blu ray players, none of them they are all excellent

What dont you like about the LX71?

Hi

Ah cheers for the info - I found that really interesting to read. No I am a big fan of the 71, the picture and sound and DVD playback can't complain. Just looking to double up and have a second one if I can find the right one. I have owned and seen at home quite a few now and the 71 has always come out on top. Sound the Denon 2500 was really good though. Just seen Pioneer are bringing out another one with similar spec to the 55 but at a lower price so I am hoping they might bring out something special at a bit higher price this year.

Cheers.
