hi guys, new to this and looking to upgrade my current setup of Sennheiser pc360, Logitech z506 and xonar dx to a reasonable setup.I have set myself a budget of around £1000 for headphones, speakers and any amp/dac required to power them - however im flexible if need beAfter some research I have been looking at the hifiman he-400 and the schiit M+M stack combo, my only issue is how i would add a set of speakers to this (2.0)Initially i was wanting to purchase a set of passive speakers such as the q acoustics 2020i for instance but then came across the audioengine a5+ which would remove the need for an amp to power them and i could also incorporate into the schiit asguard 2 as reccomended and use it as a preamp. The only thing that worries be about the self powered monitors route is no upgrade path.Could you please advise on passive speakers + amp vs the audioengines and also the best soloution for both passive and headphone on pc if that is the way to go.Thanks :)

That sounds like a good set up, maybe I'd prefer something else to the Schiit M + M. Violectric if I could justify spending the money. Anyhow, it's similar to how I have mine set up - an Audio-gd NFB12 DAC/headphone amp/preamp that enables me to switch between Sennheiser HD-650 headphones and Acoustic Energy Aego M active speakers. It's good enough and there's always other things to spend money on.

I don't get this "lack of upgrade path" thing with active speakers - if you want to upgrade passive speakers you sell them and buy some better ones. What's the difference with actives? Sell them and buy some better ones!

Is this for a desktop or for a room filling system?

Hi paul thanks for the reply, the violectric seems really nice but its a little out of my price range atm - seems like an upgrade i might look at down the line though!

Is the he-400's with asguard 2 as a headphone/preamp with the audioengine a5+'s a good way to go? guessing bifrost DAC would be best to pair with it ?

all i was meaning was that if i got speakers + amp i could upgrade either the speakers/amp down the line and keep the other.

And this is for a room filling system, it will be on my desk but while sat here i mostly use headphones anyway. Wanting speakers for when i want to turn up the volume and fill the room :)
