Passive Pre-amp superior and cheaper

Hi people,

Has anyone had expereince with passive pre amps? In theory even a cheap passive pre should outperform active preamps costing much much more. Why doesnt whathifi ever talk about the benefits of pasive pre amps? Has anyone had any exppereince with passives? Id love to hear your comments.

The thing about passive pres is that they can sound a bit flat or lifeless. An active pre will colour the signal, yes, but it often sounds better!

I think the power amp matching is more of an issue with passives too.

Surerly a passive such as the Creek OBH-22 would sound great with something beefy such as the Quad 909 power amp. Creek make quality products, and the great thing about a passive is because they are so cheap one can put more money towards a quality power amp. Has anyone had expereince or heard anything about the passive Creek OBH-22?

I still have the QED MA34 passive in use on a yamaha A100 amp. Works a treat. Nothing in there except an ALPS pot and a bypass switch. Often thought about getting a decent power amp but this would tie me down to 1 input.....
