Received my TH-42PX80B yesterday and am very happy with it. As this is my first flat screen TV it took a long time to decide which one to go for so thanks for all the help in steering me to plasma. SD images via freeview or SKY+ are good. If I sit 6ft away I can see imperfections in the picture but if I'm on the sofa 9ft away it's a stunning picture. I don't have an upscaling DVD player just a 2 year old Panasonic DMR-ES20B. I bought a component video lead and the results when watching movies make me wonder if I need blu-ray, they're fantastic! Before receiving the TV I was going to purchase this months what hifi bluray winner but now I'm not so sure. Will certainly wait for a while until prices drop. As for the price well I paid £700 including delivery for this set through John Lewis which I think is an absolute bargain given that they include a 5 year warranty! I live near Edinburgh and the John Lewis there wouldn't entertain a pricematch wth Sound and Vision of Bolton. I tried Liverpool JL who told me to contact Edinburgh. Glasgow JL did the same and I'm still waiting to hear from JL Newcastle. Eventually JL Cheadle got back to me and offered me a price of £778.87 Since this wasn't the S&V price I phoned them at which point they said they must have priced the wrong TV and they'd do it for £700. Now I regret not saying the TV was £650! JL Cheadle also said they are receiving over 150 e-mails a day asking for pricematches against S&V of Bolton!!! Anyway I'm one happy bunny and so glad I stayed clear of LCD! PS how do you make paragraph spaces on this forum? edited to apply paragraphs!

It's 'shift-comma, p, shift-full stop'.

Good to hear you're enjoying the Panasonic - it's the lead First Test in our June issue (on sale May 1st). I'm sure you're pleased with how your DVDs look, but I reckon you'll be even more impressed when you get around to Blu-ray.

I haven't seen any purple snakes on the 37PX80. Some mild retention but it goes pretty quickly.

Not everyone can afford the Kuro. Some have other priorities in life. The PX80s are good tvs at a very attractive price.

Oh, that is charming. They guy goes out and spends his hard earned money on as TV, and then an idiot like you comes on here and tells him his set is rubbish. Why don't you keep your opinions to your self?

Yes, the Pioneer is very good, but it is £500 more expensive, and frankly once in your own house most people will not notice the difference. If you can't be more positive, go away.
Ah I think I recognise that. It's the Brazilian Violet Boa native to the Amazon.
But why's it got a matching terrapin on its head?

Well I certainly haven't got one of those on my TV, although I did once have a grass snake in my wheelie bin. (I'd still be interested to know what a purple snake is when applied to plasma screens)

I'd always be extremely wary if someone wanted to show me their purple snake!

Great choice of tv GCS, went the 42px80 way myself and no regrets - not a snake in sight either, purple or any other colour.
Good ol' JL this end as well, £684.39 delivered to Scotland )

A branch that failed for the Op, JL Liverpool, just shows you how much of a Hit & Miss this JL pm can be. The initial cost was £729.90 reduced to £684.39 with a further pm within the 28 days. There's more good things than The Beatles to come out of Liverpool )

Thanks for the review. I am was interested to read your thoughts as I am now considering this set.

I started off looking at its smaller brother, the TH-37PX80B but I am really tempted to go for the 42" as I love watching films and want to be immersed in the action so to speak.

My concern about going for the 42" is two fold, firstly my viewing distance from the set. The closest would be 8-9ft and the furthest about 12-13ft. At 8ft I am concerned that I would be too close to such a large screen and I would see imperfections but you're sitting a similar distance and say the picture is very good.

Secondly I'm concerned the 42" would overwhelm the room. So I've cut out a piece of cardboard (don't laugh!) to the dimensions of the set and set it on top of the TV cabinet to get an idea of how big the set would look, and boy is it big compared to our old 28" CRT, but the 37" dimensions aren't that much smaller really.

I'm pleased that you say the SD picture is good as most of my viewing will be SD and I don't have a blu-ray or Sky HD box.

What do you think of the sound of the 42PX ? Is it ok for normal TV viewing. I have a surround system that I would use for films.

Another concern is that Plasma's suffer from reflection, as my screen would be facing a large window. How do you find this ?

I think you've already sold yourself on the 42" JSW lol Concern 1 - your viewing distance is fine for a 42" Concern 2 - thats one to decide for yourself, I was in the same position moving from a 28" crt and opted for the 42", yes it looked huge next to the 28 when it was delivered and I thought 'oh dear should've got the 37' but after a few weeks it looked smaller and I'm now of the opinion I made the correct size choice. As to sound, I personally find for normal viewing it's fine, no different from the 28" CRT it replaced tbh. Reflection - my px80 is way less reflective than the CRT it replaced.

Thanks for that info Arbk - very helpful. You've put my concerns to rest. I've just got to decide if 42" is too big for the room or not.
