Has the Panasonic PZ70 range really got a contrast ratio of only 5000:1 when other models are up to 10000:1 ? this is indicated by many online seller specs too.

From the Pana Website -

X and Z Series - We split our Plasma's into two different types: X series and Z series. The main differences between the two are the following:

Our X series TV's offer 3,072 Equivalent Steps of Gradation, Max. 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio and a Resolution (based of a 50inch screen) of 1366x768. It also has a G10 Panel and V-real II Driver which Delivers HD.

The Z series offers 4,096 Equivalent Steps of Gradation, Max. 5,000:1 Contrast ratio and a Resolution (based of a 50inch screen) of 1920x1080. It also has a G10 FULL HD Panel and V-real PRO II Driver [FHD] which delivers high quality Full-HD.

Quite right - note that we always quote contrast ratio figures as 'claimed' contrast ratio.

Lies, damned lies and statistics.... (Oh, and rugby video refs that don't know the rules)....
