I have a Panny plasma (see sig) which i'm using with an Onkyo TS-XR806 and I use the Onk to upscale material from Sky + HD. I'm about to purchase either the Pioneer SC-LX82 (or 72) which apparently don't upscale......so my question is, does the Panasonic plasma upscale? how do I set it to do this and will it do a better job than the Onkyo I'm currently using or will I notice a poorer picture on SD material if i 'upgrade' to one of the Pioneer receivers mentioned??

Incidently, how do I set the Panny to do the upscaling at present so that I can do an A/B demo??

The scaling on your Panasonic for SD is poor, SKY SD programs will look soft. At minimum the Z81 needs a 720p source. You could set your SKY HD to upscale to 1080i but it doesn't do a wonderful job for SD, a compromise is to set it to 720p but then that is no good for HD source.

Your Panny automatically upscales there is no mode for it. Only 2009 models and later scale better, and even they can be beaten by external sources.

Thanks for the info.....so an av receiver that upscales well is pretty much a necessity? It's really why I posed the question in the 1st place....thinking of 'upgrading' to a Pioneer SCLX82 which apparently, doesn't upscale HDMI signals

last years denon 1910 was able to upscale over hdmi, so i presume the higher models can too? if so why not check out some of the high end denons? the 2310 is midrange, but can now be got for under £500, for £800-£1000 i reckon you'd get a really good denon, possibly with a better scaler than the lower models?

Alright there,

I am currently using a Samsung UE55C6005 TV with viasat (Sweden's equivilent to Sky) output set to 1080i. Does this mean that I should change that to a lesser resolution and let the TV do the upscaling. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? I already changed the resolution and, to be honest with you, can't see any difference in picture on SD. Haven't checked HD yet as I am watching the Hockey!

Cheers.

You don't want to set to less than 1080i for HD broadcasts or they'll no longer be in HD! For SD, it's a matter of which has the better upscaler, your TV or the Viasat box - if you can't tell the difference, it's definitely easiest to just leave as 1080i.

Prof, I'm about to change receivers and my Onkyo has been doing a pretty good job of upscaling everything to 1080P from my Sky+ HD box. As my new Pioneer won't upscale from the Sky Box should I set the Sky output to Auto or 1080i? The reason I ask is that I've changed the Onkyo's HDMI output resolution to 'Through' to see what the results are and whether I set the Sky box to Auto or 1080i, any sd material is being shown as 576P. I was under the impression that my tv would upscale automatically being 1080P?

I was under the impression that my tv would upscale automatically being 1080P?the 576p you are seeing displayed refers to the input resolution, what the tv is being fed.

a 1080p tv will always upscale that, if it didnt you would end up with a much smaller 576p image on screen, your tv basically stretches this to fit the 1080 resolution, thus filling the screen, you dont need to do anything with the tv's settings for this to happen..

if the tv was receiving upscaled 1080i pictures, that 576p would read 1080i. so it seems either your sky box isnt upscaling the sd images when set to 1080i, or the onkyo is downscaling them to 576p again.. i think..
