This seems expensive for a Panasonic as it puts it up against some highly regarded High End Blu-Ray Players.

I thought they would be making a bigger deal of it if it was the first 4k Blu Ray player.

Upscaling is mentioned as an addition to 4k playback - it has a special upscaling chip thats indentified

There are no 4K blu ray discs. The standards for 4K blu ray haven't been announced yet. It's a normal blu ray player with 4K upscaling. Technically, you can connect your 4K camcorder to it and watch films shot in 4K.

As I see it.

It can play native 4k jpeg photos

Blu-Ray discs come in large enough sizes to accept 4k movies

It comes with the latest HDMI 2 standard

Therefore it’s quite possible that when the 4k Blu-Ray standard is agreed, a firmware update may be all that is required to play 4k discs.

For the moment though as BigBoss says it just upscales 1080p to 4k

It's got a High Grade 192kHz/32bit DAC x 4 for audio, and 4K direct chroma upscaling (whatever that means!).
