Is there a "huge" difference in terms of picture quality between the Panasonic and the Denon 3800? How about the stereo performance? Should I settle for the Denon 2500 instead? I have a 6 year old NAD C521i CD player and wonder how the 3 Blu-ray players stack up against it in terms of CD playback. I'm looking for a one-box Blu-Ray/CD player solution. Anyone?

We had the opportunity of having a demonstration of the Denon 2500 and 3800. When we saw the 2500 playing we were impressed but when we saw the same DVD playing with the 3800 the difference was very, very impressive even with a blu ray dvd. We compared the blu ray pirates of the caribbean and with regular dvd Casino royal and the incredibles. The image looked sharper and the colours more alive - vivid. Also with a music dvd (not blu ray) there was an huge difference between the 2500 and the 3800 e.g the lights/spots in front of the stage were fluid and sharp while the camera panned over the stage with the 3800, with the 2500 it was like the lights had a very small cubes around them. My wife was convinced for going for the 3800, before the demonstration the 2500would have been the player to buy.

Best is that you ask for a demonstration with your dealer and see what the differences are in audio and image.

Hi there,

if you're looking at players at the same price point as the Denon '3800BD i'd also suggest that you audition the Pioneer BDP-LX91 and the Sony BDP-S5000ES. All three of these machines are impressive.

I'm looking to enter into the kind of £800 to £1200 price bracket for a good Blu Ray player. Is the Sony outclassed by the Pioneer or the Denon 3800?

I wouldn't call the Sony BDP-S350 completely outclassed by the Denon 2500BT, the Denon is better, but what you get extra over the Sony for £440 difference isn't worth it in my opinion. In that respect, I certainly wouldn't overlook the high-end Sony player which has received rave reviews from What HiFi.

Davo2008:....as has the 2500BT which they said was "Best Blu ray player over £500".....

I guess it's all relative to whether an individual thinks the improvements warrant the price tag. Having used both Sony's budget player and the 2500BT I don't the think the blu-ray picture/sound improvements warrant the full extra cost of the Denon. DVD playback is a greater leap forward with the Denon over the Sony in my opinion, but then that's not the main reason you buy a blu-ray player.

Owners have commented that the Denon 3800BD outperfoms the 2500BT, I haven't seen the 2 against each other, but for an extra £950 I'd be expecting miracles! Yes, I know the 3800 has all the internal processing, but how many people paying this sort of money for a blu-ray player are not going to be routing it through a HD audio surround sound amp?

By comparison, at the latter part of last year I bought my Pioneeer LX5090 plasma for £2400 (incl. Pioneer wall bracket, fitting & 5 year Pioneer warranty), now you can get the TV for less than £1700. Despite this, I still think I've got excellent value for what is a superb TV but the standards of the competition, unfortunately I don't feel the same way about my Denon 2500BT.

I can't give too much away, but there's actually a group test of high-end Blu-ray players coming up in our May issue. Suffice to say we'll be featuring all the key contenders...

All i will say on this pete 321 is that folk like yourself never cease to amaze me, how you can say the Denon 2500bt doesnt really justify the extra outlay compared to the sony but yet........ You still keep the Denon!!!!

Now if it was me & i bought something that didnt warrant any extra say £50, id still take it bk & stick to what i was happy with. In a way pete you have talked yourself out of the Denon, now i know your going to say "oh the denons good & it is better than the sony but doesnt justify the extra cash & so on, so why did you keep it? why didnt you take it back?

The mind boggles.....

The only thing ill add to this pete321 is that with you not seeing the great improvements that i see in the Denon 2500bt is that "maybe" its because you have a great plasma screen in the pioneer 5090 ! Therefore its making the sony bluray player look awesome.

Now i have a great plasma but i know it isnt as good as yours, ive seen your plasma up & running in the HIFI shop & it looked fantastic to a level were a was thinking of getting one myself as my hifi store would do me a great trade of my existing plasma if i wish to do this?

Anyway thats my verdict as i do believe its your plasma thats so good!

If I thought the retailer would let me return the Denon 2500BT, swap it for a Pioneer 51 and give me £300 back, I'd take it there today. The fact is there's nothing mechanically wrong with it and it's my fault for not auditioning it in the first place before buying.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Nobody mentioned anything about Panasonic DMP-BD55 yet considering it's the Product of the Year. I guess the Denon 2500 is really that much better. Anyone of you guys actually use one of the Denons as your main CD player?

In that case shouldn't the Denon 2500BT look £490 more awesome?

jamesperfecto: Anyone of you guys actually use one of the Denons as your main CD player? Hi Jamesperfecto,

No i dont use it as my main cd player but thats not saying it isnt good with CDs, i still prefer my Arcam CD73, if you havnt a dedicated CD player already i think youll find the Denons performance very good but its not as good as a dedicated one.

Jase,

I actually have a NAD C521i CD player. While it is still an enjoyable listen, I have been using it for 6 years. I currently use it with the Onkyo 876. I'm moving my PS 3 to my office/studio so I'd like to get a better Blu-ray player that plays CD better than the NAD. There is no way for me to audition and compare both Denon and Panasonic or Sony for that matter. I don't live in the U.K.
