Panasonic 42PX80 or 50PX8 urgent decision required!

Hi, up untill recently I was happy with my Samsung PS50q97hdx, However the screen developed a fault and has to be returned. I wanted to stick with an Hd ready set as most of my viewing is SD stuff.

Basically the company has offered to replace it with the panasonic th50px8 or i could go for the 42px80 and have a few hundred quid back off them.

I have read many reviews praising the 42px80 for its sd and hd picture quality. but other than missing one hdmi and v audio will the 50px8 be on par with the 42'' px80.

I think we will miss the impact that the 50'' set gave us, But i just have that nagging feeling that i will be getting an entry level plasma in the 50px8, where as the42''px80 is a little better spec'd and has won many awards for its performance.

any help would be greatly appreciated

The 50PX8 has lower contrast, fewer shade of grey, different Vreal processor, so more like the PX70 picture wise, but it does have 100Hz, 24fps.

Reviews of the PX80 said they were an incremental improvement over the PX70, but great value for money due to much lower price.

I suspect going down to a 42" will be a bigger jolt than going from a PX80 to a PX8, but you just have to get to the shops and look at them.

Or you could ask for the LG 50PG6000 instead.

I too had a serious problem with My Samsung PS50Q97 and replaced it with the FULL HD Samsung PS50P96, not only is it a much nicer looking set and 1080p to boot but IMHO it is actually better with SD over the Q97 and I dont know if You ever noticed the anoying MOIRING effect the Q97 had due to the anti-reflective coating on the screen, well on the P96 this effect has gone!

Today i managed to get down to my local comet store to check out the two panasonic models. The guy very kindly set both sets up with a freeview channel and a casino royale on blu-ray.

I have to say there wasnt alot between the two at all, the px80 was marginally better at sd stuff but this was to be expected really. The 50'' px8 was by no means a master peice to look at but where it mattered it looked great. The PQ was fantastic the blacks were good and there didnt appear to be any judder.

I also auditioned the samsung 5 series 50'' plasma and to be honest I wasnt that impressed by it, pictures looked more grainy and the blu ray was juddering a little on fast action scenes.

So i think i have made my decision to go with the px8 50''. It may not have the best spec or the nicest looks but in my opinion it was te best all rounder.

Ill place my order tommorow and ill report back once it arrives.

Yes Krime I did notice this strange efect on the q97hdx, It drove me mad tbh!! Once you see it your eye cant detract from it.
