After extensive research I've narrowed my choice down to these two TVs. Bought from Richer Sounds, there's only a £40 difference in price, with the Pana 42" model being the slightly more expensive. I'm not that interested in Freesat at the mo (as in rented property and can't hook up a satellite dish) so it's a straight SD/Blu Ray shoot in terms of performance. I also watch a lot of sport, so motion handling is important -- I'd expect the Pana plasma to out perform the Sony LCD here, but is this the case? The option of the Freesat tuner on the Pana may pay dividends in the future, but quite frankly, given the limited number of HD broadcasts currently available, I'd rather Pana offered the same model, but cheaper, without the integrated Freesat tuner.

Any advice from r.e. the respective merits of these two TVs to help me finally make up my mind? Thanks!

I would recommend that you view these two and let your eyes decide.

IMHO I would go for the plasma at that size over the LCD, but this is just my opinion after all.

Tough call as both are excellent, and this was one of the few Sony TVs we've tested that didn't suffer from backlight bleed. Personally I'd go for the bigger screen if there's not a huge price difference, and the inclusion of Freesat is an added bonus, even if you don't need it right now.

I'd go for the Panasonic with the small price difference.

Thanks for the advice... v. helpful. Leaning toward the Pana. Hopefully Richer Sounds will let me test both TVs with freeview and not just HD content. Sure I'll be well served, whichever TV I choose.
