Onkyo TX-SR706 receiver

Just updated my receiver with the above Onkyo model. Need assistance from anyone having experience with the above receiver. I connected my old DVD player to the receiver by s-video and optical link. The sound is good but the picture on the tv looks like vhs quality and all the picture formats turned out to be 4:3. Right now I am linking the DVD player directly to the tv bys-video. Feeling rather frustrated that I could not take advantage of the upscaling by the receiver of all my dvds.

Your Pioneer has component output which would surely be better .

Or use your Sony Blu-ray player set to native, output via HDMI and let the Onkyo handle it from there?
